➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Thank you. That was my thoughts as well, seems like it would be a lot harder to clean and sanitize and possibly not last as long, but then the IncuView only holds 49 quail eggs and 27 chicken eggs as opposed to 70 something quail eggs and 42 chicken with turner and 120 quail without turner (unsure on the chicken numbers without turners) so I was kind of thinking maybe I should go with the bigger capacity especially where GQF/Hovabator have such a good reputation but I am not sure if the styrofoam is worth the little bit extra capacity. I don’t really think it is. Seems like it’s more hassle than it’s worth.
I have zero problems with my styrofoam bator.

If you aren't going to be eating your quail then you do not need a bator that will hold a hundred quail eggs you goof.
You can not turn into a quail hoarder.

I had a styro for a bit. Got it for free. I had decent sucess with it after I figured it out, but it was very, very hands on. I probably would have had an easier time with a desk lamp and a cooler.

I have been lucky.
I have the patience ( did I really just use this word) for keeping an eye on my bator daily.

I don't think many people have the time to babysit a bator so I'd highly recommend getting a bator that you can set the eggs and leave the house for a week.
But I think that Kdog would end up sitting next to a bator non stop either way so I think she could do fine with one that was not top of the line.

umm how big of a brooder are you building? I would get the place for the brooder figured out and build the brooder before getting an incubator... I was lucky I had an old 2x4 stock tank and a spot in the basement... it gets crowded and I have to use cardboard boxes for the overflow and I have an incuview
I won't allow her to buy a bator until a cage is built.
Kdog! No bator until you build.

I don't know about a good reputation. Just cause they been around a long time don't mean they're good. I think good reviews come from people that aren't really familiar with different brands. Most backyard chicken people aren't gonna spend 500.00 on a brinsea and just want something to mess around with without going to expensive and thats where the Styrofoam incubators come in

Hmm that’s true but I also don’t think that just because something is more expensive means that it’s better. Now, in this case, I know that Brinseas are good incubators which somewhat the justifies the price (though I still think they are overpriced) but still, in general, more doesn’t always mean better. But you do have a point that a lot of people want a cheap incubator but I don’t think that every styrofoam one is bad. And every review I have read has been good and people always seem to suggest the Hovabator, all varieties but especially the Genesis 1588, and people always seem to have good hatch rates in them, so surely that counts for something? To me that counts as a good reputation since everyone always recommends them and surely not every person that uses them is inexperienced or backyard? They are also almost $200 so definitely not cheap by any means. I mean, cheaper than Brinsea for sure, but more middle of the road price, not the cheap like $30 or $50 styrofoam ones found at TSC. I do think they have a good reputation and are a good incubator. But that said, I do not think I will be buying a styrofoam one just because they’re harder to clean, but I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to say it’s a bad incubator or only inexperienced people leave good reviews or whatever. Granted, some styrofoam incubators, most even, have terrible hatch rates, like the ones available at TSC, but this one always seems to have good hatch rates.

I've got a DIY one that I'll put up against any Brinsea of similar size. Median hatch rate last year was 100%. To be fair, I'm also not hatching hundreds of eggs.

Yeah, I think Brinsea is a good incubator but for me they are overpriced no matter how good they are so for me it’s either a middle of the road ~$200 one or a $500-$600 or more cabinet incubator which I can’t afford because I’m not gonna pay $200 for something that holds like 8 eggs. Some styrofoams can be good and I think GQF is one but it does seem more complicated and some parts are not digital. I think I may go with the incuview.

I am not sure yet. Haven’t built it yet but thinking I can brood in their adult cages/run when I build them. But oh wow! Really!? I guess 50 is kind of a lot of quail lol

Thanks!! I may still consider it then. It does hold more eggs. Idk. Is yours hard to clean?

Hmmm... that is true.... I would probably run out of room with one hatch lol maybe it would be good to get the slightly smaller bator and contain/limit myself lol but I want all the cool colors!! But I should probably start basic before going crazy trying to get every color I can find lol

Patience? Yeah, right! You just don’t want to miss the quail hatching!! :p

And hmmm, yeah you are probably right!! I probably would!!! LOL although idk. I might get bored until they hatch. I kind of like the set it and leave it type lol

Okay, okay, build first!! Or maybe order then build then order eggs lol no egg ordering until it’s built.

I'd you do get Styrofoam then research dry incubation and do that. Throw the directions away

Thanks I’ll do that. Does regular incubation ruin the styrofoam ones?

No.

Plan right. ( my way)
