Oh, I'm past the age of having brats. I will be 37 this year.

Ringo, the Sheppie, is my parent's dog. He's here quite frequently with how often they travel. He's a great dog! View attachment 1721119

I'll take the age comment to mean that I sound super mature in my commentary and that I look super young — Yes. It can mean nothing else.

He's a good dog, but I'm glad he's not mine. I'm not a fan of the breed. Too busy, very rarely calms down, humorless with other dogs, don't seem to know how to play with other dogs. He's nicer than most I've come across, but he just doesn't seem to have an "off" switch.

For the past week or so we've been putting the Buff Orpington Priscilla and NH Red Amber in the big coop with the older girls. We had to wait until they went in to their small coop and then grab them and transfer them over. Priscilla was pretty chill. Amber would always flap like crazy and act like we were going to murder her every time we grabbed her. We'd leave the boys in the small coop to sleep for the night. Well, last night we had some storms roll through in the late afternoon/early evening. Bowie didn't like something in the air I guess. He started running around doing the "egg song". I mean, a legit "egg song". This was in the evening, after everyone laid for the day it was probably about 30 mins or so before they were to go in for the night. I'm assuming as a call to the girls, trying to round them up maybe? He was acting weird. Then when it was time for them to go in for the night we found that Amber was already in the big coop. She went in for the first time on her own (I guess she got tired of us grabbing her at night lol) and Bowie had decided to join the big girls and he parked his white fluff butt in one of the nest boxes to sleep for the night. I find that funny because that was my biggest worry about combining all of them in the 1 coop. I know Silkies don't roost like other chickens and will nest low. So I was worried that he'd be right under them for wanting to be near them all and would end up getting pooped on all night. I'm glad I don't have to worry about that. I just have to clean out the nest box that he slept in right away to keep from getting poopy eggs. I can deal with that. We still had to move over Priscilla. And we didn't want to leave Elvis alone by himself so over he went too. Everyone seemed to do well. I'm interested in how tonight is going to go. If Amber and Bowie settle in the big coop again or if it was a fluke. And whether or not Priscilla and Elvis follow suit. I'm wanting that small coop as a grow out type thing for the littles until we get the bigger coop built.

Everyone is doing great! Been working with the young pup on his training every day and he is pretty darn responsive. Knows all his commands, but has an independent streak, which is nice in many ways and annoying in others. Edie, the black and tan kid, is such a hog that it's hard to get pics of her face. Anyhow, here's a photo bomb.

@NanaKat I'd like to know what you do for a brooder setup too. I went crazy and set 56 eggs, followed by another 42 a few days later. I'm hatching them for a sale, but still need to accommodate them until then, and if they don't sell.

And aw poor guy!! I think it depends a lot on the lines though so you might like other dogs of the breed. Just there are soooo many different lines some of them are like completely different breeds lol and even within the same lines, different breeders breed for different things. I find a lot of the American ones are pretty poor examples in general and some can be pretty nervy (I.e. lack thereof, lacking confidence/nervous dogs, etc.), not all obviously but a lot. And a lot of the Czech/DDR/East German dogs (I think there’s supposed to be subtle differences between those 3 but I’m not sure of them so putting them together) I think are supposed to be more energetic or sometimes more aggressive/civil/“hard” and harder to handle. A lot of the sable dogs come from these lines. So that could possibly be part of it. Although of course now a lot of breeders blend lines so he might not be. I think if I ever got a GSD, it would be from West German lines. Probably show but possibly working or a blend. Although I’ve read you’re not really supposed to blend lines but idk. It can be done successfully, just have to be careful and find the right breeder. But I just in general find the West German lines to be better, imo. Or not really better, cause they’re all great for different people, but better for me I should say. Better looks imo and better personality/temperament for me. Able to work but not crazy and have a better off switch. And I find better structure. Plus of course I love those deep deep reds the West German lines are known for. So I think it does depend pretty heavily on the lines and the individual breeder but I haven’t met many Shepherds that I like either. The really great ones are just so few and far between, I think. And it’s not even that WG is superior, they’re not, but all lines I mean, there aren’t that many really really standout dogs imo. But they do exist. And for me, if I ever got one, WGSL or WGWL would be what I would go with. But sorry for the novel, maybe you already know a lot of this, I just really like dogs and talking about them and have done a lot of research on this as well as tons of other breeds and topics like training so when I get even the slightest opportunity to talk about them I go crazy sorry

She attacked our goats twice and then we put her down. Two more females from American lines. Bad hips on one, weird throat issue on another. Solid black male from German lines and he was a really well behaved dog, but utterly humorless. Wouldn't let the other dogs play, and never showed an interest in playing himself. He also murdered cats. I have many years of experience with them, and I just don't care for the breed overall. Many people do, though!

Oh wow he sounds like a really great dog!!! And ahhh okay. Sounds like you definitely have a lot of experience with them!!! Definitely way more than me and sounds like it varies a ton!!! Seems like even dogs within lines that are supposed to have certain traits might not have those traits. Which I figured could happen but never really had any personal experience to confirm, only really know what I’ve read/researched, which is also probably highly subjective. From my reading I thought WG would be best but it seems like I need to just focus more on a good breeder with good dogs rather than getting so hung up on lines. But that’s if I even get a GSD which I might not. I think I’d like to experience one as they seem great but maybe not. Idk. I really want a Berger Blanc Suisse. And several other breeds like Aussie, Golden, Lab, BC, Samoyed, collie, ES, etc. and from what I have heard, some of the herding breeds, idk if it’s all or not, can be kind of bossy with other dogs and big on enforcing rules/controlling or herding other dogs rather than playing (or sometimes that IS their version of playing) which can sometimes cause fights. Seems GSDs may fall into that category. But then again, I have seen GSDs playing.

Lots of different breeds of dogs for all sorts of different kinds of people. German Shepherds, for all their faults, boy are those dogs easy to train. I've trained many dogs, and they are hands down the smartest.
