Little chickens were in with big chickens for about an hour today. One of the two adults I'm watching closely didn't bother pecking unless one ran right under her. The other was still being a jerk but she wasn't relentless about it. The littles still panic a bit so I got them out after a while and then had to herd them into their mini coop because they aren't bell trained yet. So annoying. I need an evening where I can leave them in until the adults go to bed to see whether they'll follow. They're starting to regard the adult run as a safe place to go when a strange sound startles them so they're getting there.

Just candled a call duck egg while Ruth was off her nest. looking good! Mostly dark, with a large air cell. May 8th will mark 28 days. I've heard that calls can be 26 days, so I guess I better be ready.
I am going to set up some paint trays for water, but otherwise, I'm just going to let mama duck do her thing.

I live in a fully fenced subdivision and absolutely no outsiders get into my yard.
They are eating it all. I forgot to add that they also eat my cat's food. I caught them doing that the other day.

Your chickens are fat pigs. If the mice and birds aren't helping out, that is.

Song birds can also go through lots of chicken feed. I went through a period where a 50 lb. sack of feed that would normally last 3 weeks was suddenly being gone through in 1 to 3 days. The culprits were starlings. I went down one night with a pellet pistol and cleaned out 83 starlings that one night. After a couple of weeks of eliminating starlings, the feed usage returned to normal.
The dreaded starling. My granny used to send us kids to the barn to knock their nests down. She loved her swallows and hummers, but she hated starlings.
