➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

I have several HUGE trees in my back yard. Hickory, I believe. And I despise the nuts. These are huge nuts and also covered in an outer green shell. I’ve tried to crack them, but it’s almost impossible to do. I even looked up how to crack hickory nuts thinking I might could make some money off these things. Nope, I’m not gonna subject myself to that aggravation in order to try to make money.

I’ve already shot out two from under the lawnmower and shattered one large picture window and put a good sized hole in another. I can’t walk in my back yard because they are a trip hazard. Seriously! For me anyway. I actually have two sizes of nuts, come to think of it and the smaller ones are the nuts I go slip sliding on...all the way down the hill. My feet have actually zipped right out from under me on multiple occasions. My whole back yard is probably a 30* slope and my coops are built at the top of it soooo, there ya go. I have no other choice than to fight them. Many years I’ve tried raking them up, which isn’t an easy task. And then I have to haul them off to the back pasture one wheelbarrow load at a time. They don’t burn! I’ve tried. :barnie Truly, these things are a PIMA.

Anyone have any ideas what I can do? These trees will be here long after I’m gone so I’ve just got to learn to live with them.

I about twisted my ankles a few times stepping on them. I feel ya! :hugs

There are many kinds of hickory, only some are worth eating. Shagbark makes nuts that taste like pecans on steroids but the shell is super hard. I have a small vise attached to a board that works well.

Ah ha! I could use the vise in the barn, huh? My LGD will actually lay there and crack those things with her teeth. The chickens will all gather around her waiting to steal a cracked one. And I also read that hickory nuts are poisonous to dogs. :idunno

ETA: changed VICE to VISE. LOL

My mom says Eye-talian, and most of the Kansas folk said it too. ;) I purposefully changed how I said it to eh- since eye sounded wrong.
SIL is the only one in her family who says eye-talian and she knows it is wrong but picked up the habit going to college in Wisconsin. She went to a certain pizza place in Brentwood, TN where they are Seinfeld fans and they told her she couldn't have her order unless she said it correctly. I told her she's lucky they didn't send her to the back of the line.

That’s what I’m talking about. I think I say it differently and don’t even realize it. Except pecans. I ALWAYS say puh-caans. Not “pew” just “puh.”

Yeah I think I do too!! And then when I was trying to think about it to make the video or type here I got all confused and couldn’t say it how I normally do cause I was overthinking it. :lau

Pecan is definitely PEE can though. :P ;)

The barn is a fine place for vices as well as vises. No judgement here.
