➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

I love alligators. They’re such cool animals and I think kinda misunderstood. They’re illegal here though. Probably for good reason. I don’t think I’d ever want one for a pet. They definitely can be dangerous but they’re cool animals.

:lau they say everything tastes like chicken lol

It’s supposed to be really good! My parents apparently ate it all the time when they lived in Florida lol or at least my dad did.

Is it common in Texas? I imagine it’s kind of expensive?

I can see why he’d like alligator... it’s unique, different. I imagine most birds taste pretty similar?? Maybe not.

Thanks again! Very helpful.

And yeah, that’s what I’m afraid of!!

I’m glad I didn’t go out and buy one when I wanted to whenever that was recently cause I had no idea this was a thing.

Which is weird cause I’ve done a fair amount of research and watched a lot of videos, etc. but never seen it mentioned before. Even in that reptile guy’s videos.

That said, I did just find this article but I had to Google hibernation or something specific like that to find it, I don’t think it would have popped up in just regular searches for info/care.

Anyway, do you agree with it?

We buy it from Louisiana.
I'm not sure I have even seen it sold any where near me.

if you have a choice always get tail meat.

Thanks!! I’ll have to try that sometime.

That makes sense. I don’t think we have any here though I did see it for sale in a Pittsburgh grocery store once.

Yeah it’s sold by the pound in slabs tail meat. I don’t think I’ve seen any other besides wings (legs) sold. Usually it’s in the food already prepared. Like if you buy a frozen alligator sauce piquant or something. It’s pretty affordable too tail is about 4.00lb

That sounds really good. :drool

Although what is this piquant sauce you keep mentioning? Is it a specific dish or the name of a sauce or?

Thanks again. I never knew all this stuff. Weird it’s not mentioned more often. And that makes a lot of sense! Thanks. This is probably a stupid question but is it hard to take care of them while they’re hibernating? Do you just like leave them alone? I’d be scared I’d kill it or something. I imagine a lot of new owners probably call their vet panicked and/or accidentally bury the animal?
That is why it is important to read actual books and focused/in depth discussions not just basic care sheets and videos. The latter sources give you a general sense of what to buy, how to select a healthy animal, typical temperament, what it eats etc. But there is a lot more to learn than that! I am still researching and learning as much as I can about my reptile pets.

ETA this is not a criticism. YouTube videos and internet posts are a great way to start your research and figure out what animal might suite you. But I have noticed that a lot of the popular sites and videos contain the same fairly basic info. To really get a good understanding though, you eventually have to dig deeper. In my experience, books typically offer more detailed info.

This more general than I would like. It is not bad as a starting point but you are better off in the long run looking up info specific to your type of animal.
