I knew that you would!Oh, my. I want goslings.
The poor hatch rate can be attributed to shipped hatching eggs from sea level to a mile high elevation. The dense sea level egg shells are not conducive to good air exchange through the shell at our higher elevations and lower oxygen concentrations. Most of the failed hatchers were in the final stages before apparently suffocating.Forgive my ignorance, are geese hatch rates lower? Or this hatch attributed to shipped eggs? Are you getting into geese?
I am rather glad that I am not going to the feed store often right now. I would undoubtedly been unable to resist the goslings.I knew that you would!
You would have enjoyed the spectacle last night when the one in the brooder had a scratching fit. I managed to get the culprit this morning as I found a tiny little ant strolling around the brooder.
Oops... American Buffs, One year olds...Mine are piling up eggs at the moment. They had eleven yesterday afternoon. I'm gonna check in a few minutes since they're all out exploring. I chased a turkey off there nest to look for off-species eggs. Usually I find a chicken one or two and the occasional turkey egg. Should have counted then but didn't think of it. So, at what point does this not sitting become an issue?
When it is getting too cold at night, leaving the eggs in the nest can cause problems (possible explosive eggs) later. Some people collect the eggs just as if they were going to incubate them and then return them to the hens once they become broody.Mine are piling up eggs at the moment.
