➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Something raided the guinea nest. All 7 of my falsies are gone. I put them there to keep my free ranging guineas coming back to lay there. The only things in the nest today was two real guinea eggs. I need to get new falsies. Ceramic falsies are not cheap. I think I'm going to go to walmart and get golfballs.

I hope whatever took them has a bad stomach or tooth ache.

Imagine seeing a snake that ate them all 🤣 Someone has a snake swallow their ceramic eggs

But, but.... baby turkeys are hatching. I just came in the house, as I was passing the turkey hens, I heard one start baby talking. I was at least 20' away and she was already warning the babies about me.
By the way... only 1 turkey has survived. The other 5 dropped dead once it started getting hot out. No idea what happened. No sign of disease or predator attack. They were getting the poult feed and had two 5 gallon buckets with water cups I saw them drinking from constantly. Plus we have regular buckets they could drink from.

Jerky the Turkey thinks it’s a dog. It hangs out by the quail aviary staring at it like it’s a tv. It’s name is jerky because it’s a jerk (sometimes). It likes chasing everyone, but I think to be friends. The chickens get pissed then puff out and Jerky pecks them or continues to chase them. It like pecking my rings and missing the ring then pinching my skin. Also likes glitter toe polish and pinches toes as well. It makes these funny happy noises whenever it sees us.

I will not be getting more birds from TSC. I NEVER lose chicks unless I buy them from there. We have lost a lot we have bought from them, but if we buy local or hatch, we never lose a single bird.

Did you provide them with shade?

Nada, though the banks are seriously overgrown.
Two falls ago one of my homemade clay eggs disappeared from a guinea nest. I usually find the missing eggs close to the nest. I didn't see it anywhere. I thought I would find it when I mowed but it never showed up.

Last spring when I when mowed over that particular nest, I spotted what looked like part of the egg in the same guinea nest. Upon closer inspection, it was the missing egg. The guineas had buried it in the nest the previous and the freeze, thaw cycles had uncovered it.

Yes, they have trees that shade an entire area. They didn’t all die at one time. Maybe 1 a week.

Jerky is usually behind the coop in the shade waiting to terrorize everyone with its big feet and clumsiness.
Trees are not necessarily sufficient shade for poults that are being kept in a cage.
