⭐ Kiki's Year Long 🌶️

Had a bit of a scare today when I went to round up my chickens (they were free-ranging this afternoon). I called them and put them in the run, then realized I was missing one. Finally found her wandering around in the front yard. She got through the gate somehow and couldn't figure out how to get back :he
that’s one thing i don’t miss about having free range poultry is having to put them up  (even in my tiny backyard)

Yeah it can be a real pain if they don't want to cooperate. Mine are pretty good at coming when called and will follow me into the run (because I have food lol.). But if one gets separated or decides to ignore me, then Hansel becomes my only hope :gig

I don’t mind the actual putting them up part since mine are good and go to bed all by themselves so all I have to do is close the doors and count them which takes about two seconds but I don’t like having to be right there with them the entire time they’re out! And even if I am right there sometimes it’s still not enough! So I haven’t really been letting them out lately. But then they are so happy out and so bored locked in so :barnie

Mine are little angels and go in all on their own as soon as it’s dark enough :love if not, I just wait a little longer lol now, sometimes they cut it a little bit close for my liking and scare me but they always go to bed eventually. I used to chase them around and try to catch them and get them to go to bed earlier but now I just wait them out :lau that said though, they are not great about going in before dark if I ever need them too :lau :th they’re like “heck no! I’m free sucka! Hahaha!” :th

Mine put themselves to bed at dusk just fine. But oftentimes I need them to go back in the run earlier than that. Today it was only 3 but DH and I were leaving to run an errand. And I won’t let them freerange unless someone is home to keep an eye on them.

I have a call I do to get them to come to me. They generally listen and will then follow me back into the run to get a treat. Things only get complicated if one gets left behind. Or forgets how doors work 🤦‍♀️

Ah okay that makes sense! Mine are the same way actually. They are such a pain to try to get to go back in before bedtime! LOL unless I have food then they usually run right in BUT they are smart and somehow know it is a trick and run back out! :ep OR! They all will go running in except for ONE who knows so I can’t shut the door because that one is not in yet so they all come back out! :th :barnie

Mine used to come to me when I just had my original ones and some of them still will but now they mostly just ignore unless I actually bring something out :hit

I haven’t been letting mine out lately though because I’ve been so scared to ever since losing that pullet. I’ve had a lot of losses this year and I’m just over it. I don’t let them out unless we are home but I’m not out with them the whole time and just occasionally look through the windows or go find them if I can’t see them or whatever. But that’s why I haven’t let them out until today because I want to start being with them the whole time.

Snow is melting , muddy ground. Letting chickens out today to move around after keeping them in for three day.
Remodel...Should meet with carpenter about cabinets, and the plumber and electrician this next week.
Tax records to do too.
