This is my first hatch a long, I'm so excited about what my son's and I have cooking! My incubators are currently filled with-
Lieges
Black Copper Marans
Cream Leg Bars
Svart Honas
Seramas
Prairie Bluebells
Icelandics
Pavlovskayas
A mixture of rare breed eggs that I have one or two of each and my usual barnyard mix of my beloved Cochin Rooster and some EE's and Brahmas!
I will also have some conturnix quail, Muscovys and guineas!
I will post lots of pictures along the way, we are looking forward to a great month and welcoming a few new breeds!

Yeah try to see what chicken wire you can find. I would do wire on the top too because raccoons and other predators can easily climb a dog kennel. I don’t think bird netting will keep them out.

I like quail more than chickens. I’ve actually decided to just hatch quail until the spring when we decide what we want to do. May do a few chicken hatches then, but we will be keeping none.

Yeah, if I do a kennel it will probably have part of a cattle panel on the top that is also covered in either chicken wire or some kind of other fencing. The dog kennel we use for our night run is like that. My husband calls it the Chicken Fort Knox. Raccoons are bad here, so that is something that we are good at predator proofing for.

She said that the quail are just Jumbo Brown Meatmaker Coturnix.

How much room do I need to allow per quail?

No idea... I have an 8x8 aviary and I was told by quail pros that I could fit 30 in it. I only have 9 in it right now.

So 1.5 sq ft per bird, but I honestly think 2+ is best. I want to put more females in my 8x8. My other 8x8 has only 15 quail chicks in it with a 4x4 coop in the middle. They rarely go in the coop, but I’m sure they will in the winter.

this will help you... jumbos I don’t have, but they live less time than regular Coturnix. They’re great for meat though and to get eggs from to incubate. Do 4:1 ratio... Hens to Male.

When the Quail are at egg laying age, you can check their vents and the males will have foam. So much easier than chickens. Plus their crow is insanely cool. You’ll love it. Just don’t have too many males because they’ll scalp each other and stuff.

you also have to put rocks into their waterer because they seem to drown easily. I take out the rocks when they’re 2 weeks old.

first time ever hatching. This is one of our Easter Eggers we are on day 7

Ok I looked at my other posts but I can't remember if I asked this question before and if I did sorry for the repetition.
I have 1 egg (which admittedly was more of a test egg that I was doubtful would ever develop) that is due to go into lockdown on Saturday but I also have between 4-8 eggs that are due to go into lockdown on the 12th. Due to school I can't take out the automatic turner and hand turn the others. What should I do for the one egg that is due to hatch?

You’ll be home Saturday, right?

Leave the turner on until Saturday morning unplug it, let the chick hatch then plug it back in...

OR

Leave the turner plugged in the whole time and watch closely. I’ve never had a chick get stuck in my turner when I’ve left it on during hatching (I do this often with quail. Usually they end up in the empty holes from eggs tossed before lockdown and it rocks them to sleep 😂

Ok great! I should be home Saturday so I’ll just plan to keep an eye on it.
