That sure is a lot of pigment out of a little bird isn't it?

As with chickens and other birds, there is a direct correlation between age and the point in the laying cycle with the amount of pigment applied.

A little update on our August hatches!

we ended up with 1 Welsummer pullet, one gorgeous welsummer/Sussex cockerel, one buff orpington cockerel, and 4 buff orpington pullets.

we lost one of our runner ducks at a few days old, but we have two drakes and two hens left.

A little update on our August hatches!

we ended up with 1 Welsummer pullet, one gorgeous welsummer/Sussex cockerel, one buff orpington cockerel, and 4 buff orpington pullets.

we lost one of our runner ducks at a few days old, but we have two drakes and two hens left.

They look great! Such a nice update. I can't even remember what I hatched in August. Lol...oh! It was my Mottled Orpingtons!

These are pictures of them from just last week but they're not the best because it was cold and wet out, lol. I kept 3 of the Mottled English Orpingtons, 2 Lavander Mottled and 1 Black Mottled. We ended up with 1 lavender cockerel and the other 2 are pullets!

I may have actually included them in a previous hatch-a-long because they hatched on August 1st. Either way, there they are. lol

Loving the August updates! It was an incredibly rough year for predators. It warms my heart to see so many HAL birds healthy and strutting their stuff.

I'm down to 8 birds: 2 ducks from '20 Easter HAL, 3 Silverudd's and 2 Marans pullets from the '20 August HAL, and one older barred rock hen. My best luck with shipped eggs has always been in Jan/Feb. I'll likely join a '21 HAL for then but I was excited to see so many familiar faces posting and still hatching year round. I really need a new chicken area completed before I do any serious hatching and join the ranks again.

Oh yay! I love seeing the grown up hatched babies!
Here are some of mine:

The 2 ducks on the right were the ones out of my own eggs, from a silver appleyard duck and a blue runner drake.

My sweet little magpie drake.

I had lots of others but many of them went to new homes. Or I don’t have updated pics of them. Lol.
