How long can a chick go between internal pip and external pip
Not sure; I don't always pay that much attention to the time. I take the egg to a dark closet and have a look. If the chick is still working on getting out, that reassures me. I guess maybe 24 hours would be an average. If you're worried and it's been longer than 24 hrs, I'd probably pick out a little safety hole in the farthest reaches of the air pocket. A needle works for me, or the narrow tip of a sharp knife or similar.

First pip!

I read somewhere on here that as chicks grow, they can create heat of their own while incubating.

Since yesterday I'v been getting climbing temps after being rock solid for better than 10 days. Out of 27 eggs I have 15 growing, and seeing movement.

I'm hoping it's growing chicks because otherwise my bator's temp sensor might be going bad. :(

When I have bad eggs I can tell by touching the eggs before even candling. Quitters and infertile eggs do not get warm, they stay cold.
