After July its hard to get bees to draw a lot of comb. It's good to set your comb building goals before the end of July.A few weeks ago, we put an empty deep on top of the Newbies, hoping that they'd draw a little comb in preparation for next year.

I also don't count on any real comb build after the spring flow. It seems like a halfhearted effort on the bees part and spread unevenly across the frames. Going into the fall I'd rather have the house bees working on honey production than the worker numbers pulled away on la de da comb work. Supers with foundation are drawn for me faster in the spring as we have an abundance of nectar and pollen from various natural and cultivated Blueberries and Cranberries. Fall flow is good but bees know it's time to pack in the winter stores. I don't really try to force the bees. They'll let me know what they need. After July its hard to get bees to draw a lot of comb. Thank you both. This is exactly what's happening. We'll pull the deep on the Newbies soon. I'll put a note on the calendar to put it back next April-ish.I also don't count on any real comb build after the spring flow. That sounds good. Thank you!
Thank you for the picture. That's pretty close to the first lids we made.View attachment 4219363
Roughly 32 holes, more bees to empty jar and get it into cells for their process, I use a 1/16 drill bit, 12, 3, 6 and 9 O'clock and try to fill in some kind of pattern.

We'll use them when we get back home.
Thank you again!
Hi and welcome! I'm glad you found my journey.I just found this! It’s great to see more new beekeepers. I will definitely be following along. I skimmed through, hit the high points, etc. I tend to not get into a lot of detail especially when it comes to taking pics of what’s going on inside the hive. The more I mess around the angrier my bees get!![]()
This is only year 3 for me. Most definitely still a novice, but I have learned a lot of “what not to do” in those 3 yearsHi and welcome! I'm glad you found my journey.
I'm a picture taker...lol, but they are getting spicier. Especially the closer we get to winter!
How long have you been keeping bees?
Hubby and I are in that same boat! This is only year 3 for me. Most definitely still a novice, but I have learned a lot of “what not to do” in those 3 years
