Pretty cool looking bird.


How long has she been laying now? If you tracked her first 20-30 eggs, this will give you an idea of her average true egg color that she will lay at the beginning of her cycle, and then of course they fade in color towards the end as she runs out of paint in the booth.

You probably know this already... Commenting just in case or for others who stumble in

She has been laying since march. this is what her first eggs looked like.

I will be curious to see how it develops. The patchy coloring, with red feathers coming in, is making me think cockerel. But that head sure looks female, with small comb and wattles. Pea combs and the associated small wattles make it hard to tell, so I usually look for red color as a confirmation-- and the fibro is messing me up there!


It's interesting to see how just a few traits can make it so much harder to sex the chicks!

yes those are from the whiting true blue, I have one that lays a white egg and I just rehomed her due to her constant noise making. just had a nervous honking sound that she did at all times. this morning the flock was very quiet and calm.

I’ve got one more interesting chick. The egg was labeled as Marans cross and it was a nice dark reddish egg. The comb is more of a dull pink, it was yellowish when younger, looks like a single comb and is fairly short. It’s bearded and the wattles are small.
The bird is very active and good at catching bugs. It also has nice thick legs and I’ll find it sparring with other birds too.

Definitely a puzzler. I'm leaning male, but I can explain away every "male" trait in one way or another, so I'm not confident either way. Again, I'll be curious to see what it turns out to be!

it’s probably not a reliable tell, but when that bird above was a chick, it had a chipmunk pattern with a distinct and sharp eyeliner pattern. That made me lean pullet from hatch. But it also has an upright cockbird kinda stance.
