0 too much for dogs? Dog Shooting Question

I say 0 is a better stopper than BB in my experiance. it is for taking down larger game but will work great on dog preds.

If what you have is the 12 gauge Savage Model 69 series E pump shotgun with an 18 inch barrel chamber for 2 3/4 in shells you should be able to reach out to approximately 15 yards or 45 feet with 0 buck. You should have no problem making a clean kill (provided you have a clear shot) on any size dog at that range.

I for one am curious as OvenReady seems to have perfect English language skills

I'm not a Thai National. I was born in the UK and grew up there mostly hence my language skills as comparable to someone from the UK. I've lived in Thailand for over ten years and sometimes my speech comes out the wrong way 'not like that' instead of 'I don't like that' but when writing you get the chance to fix your mistakes.
It would be carefree if I didn't have to constantly worry about feral dogs, apart from that it's a lovely place to own chickens, it's a lovely place all together.

I don't know what feral dogs are like in the US. I have visited there a few times, some for a vacation and some for business when I was working, but obviously I've not visited everywhere and not seen anywhere 'under the skin' so to speak. Here feral dogs seem to cause about the same problems as the US has with raccoons, these dogs aren't just one or two neighbours dogs that have strayed on to our property (we know them and chase them off with slingshots), these are dogs that get dumped at Temples and the monks 'look after' them, then they form a pack and cause havoc to the surrounding area. Most Thai's shoot troublesome dogs with 9mm handguns, which wouldn't be my first choice but that's what they have available.

On to the subject.
It is the 18 inch barrel for 2 3/4 shells. It only holds 4 shells in the magazine.

I sounds like the 0 shot will be OK. I'll get them and try some practice shots to make sure I'm in the right distance for the spread and to check the kick.

Thanks to everyone and thanks for all staying on topic and I want to make it clear for anyone else reading this that the reason I asked was because I wanted to make sure that the 0 buckshot would be as humane a kill as the BB shot has proven itself to be.

BB make a bunch of little holes 0 buck makes a few BIG holes.

I hunt predators. I use #4 buckshot on coyotes here in the states. That will stop them at 40 yards. They weigh 20-40 pounds (10-20 kilos approximately) so I'm guessing that 00 buck will work just fine. Aim just front of center mass and you will put them down. Quick and humane. I'm pretty sure your shotgun is full choke. Should say on the barrel.

This is what I was worried about, the BB shot is so numerous that it's pretty much guaranteed to hit a vital organ. With only 9 pellets in the 0 buckshot I didn't want to have say, 3 pellets hit the hind quarters and leave the animal injured rather than dead. I guess I'll need to practice a bit.

There's nothing on the barrel that mentions choke, but there certainly isn't an aftermarket choke in it and the barrel appears dead straight at the end, inside and out, although that's not a very scientific measure.

but for instance, if those 3 pellets did hit somewhere in the hind quarters, the larger mass of the 0 shot would be enough to shatter any bone it came in contact with, enough punch to possibly break it's back to boot. BB's lack the penetration to kill larger targets IMO. BB's are meant for small game such as rabbits, waterfowl and other birds IMO

When I was Stationed at Korat Air Base about 450 miles north of Bangkok we were told to kill every dog in the fenceline. Mostly because of rabies and setting off the trip flares. We used a Remington 870 with 00 buck with great success. Single 0 should also be a good dog stopper. Here I use #4 from racoon to coyote in 3" magnum #1 buck also works well, 16 pellets in 3". I'm surprised you even have a shot gun in Thailand knowing how hard it was to obtain a gun back in the '60s.

EXACTLY!

BB is mostly used for Goose and Turkey. # 4 and #5 Ducks, #5 and #6 Rabbit, #7 ½ and #8 Quail, #8 and #9 Dove. Find the size category you’re pray fits in and that’s the size shot to use.
