Good Morning. Yes, I am very new to chickens... in fact I don't have my chickens just yet. I wanted to find out a lot about them prior to getting my first chicks! I ran into someone in Hackettstown NJ and they recommended this site. I am looking forward to reading all of your groups helpful messages to hopefully avoid some big mistakes in my start up. I plan to start off with about 4 chickens. Thanks for letting me join!! :)

Hi! Welcome to BYC! I would start with choosing a breed that you like. Have you chosen a breed yet? Then I would give them a good amount of space especially if they are big birds or if they aren’t free ranging. Keep their coop and water clean it helps keep them healthier. Make sure that they have shade. That’s all I can think of at the moment, feel free to ask any other questions and we will be happy to do our best answering them. Good Luck!

Welcome! I would seriously think about getting coop first while deciding on breeds. I started with pre-fab but wishing I took more time to build own coop. Check other coops and lessons learned on BYC coops.
