I got chicks from Ideal a week ago and I noticed last night that one of them had a droopy looking eye. I took it out and examined it and noticed a clear goopy film over the eye and the lid, it also cannot close this eye for some reason. I used saline and cleaned around the eye, got the goop off and it seemed like it could somewhat close the eye. I didn't want to stress it further so I made sure the eye was dry and put it back in the brooder.

Tonight I noticed the same problem, took it out and examined it again and noticed that it had a piece of shaving stuck to to the eyelid. I cleaned it again but it cannot close that eye at all now. The eye doesn't appear swollen any.
I am feeding medicated starter feed and am putting vitamins in the water. I have a heat lamp about 2 to 3 feet above the brooder, they seem to huddle together under the lamp, so I think I will lower it.

I have been trying to look up what may be the cause of the goop in the first place but am not having much luck.
I'm going to keep it separated for now, but would really appreciate any advice on this.
I have 30 chicks total, no other ones are showing any signs of it....yet...

Please help me, I don't want to lose ANY!

The wet looking feathers around the eye are from me cleaning it, when it's dry all you can see is the eye looks deformed and has goop in it.

I'm taking this chick to the vet today, will post what I find out as far as treatment when I return for those who are having similar issues.

What happened to this site?

Good Luck and God Bless!

P.s. Every one should be home from work soon maybe they will be able to help.

I am sorry no one responded, but I don't think it was reflective of interest of the members. Sometimes things get missed, for whatever reason. I noticed that you first posted late last night. Maybe before people saw yours, many more questions were posted, and it was pushed back down the list where it wasn't as noticeable.

I had more luck when I had questions about chicks, even with illness questions; by using the raising chicks forum. Maybe you would get more responses that way.

I sure am glad you have a vet you can take the chick to, have you already gone, and if so, what was the diagnosis?

Hope your chick gets better.

Carrie
