10-12 day old buff Cochin with splinted foot

Hi all:

My 10-12 day old buff Cochin has a wonky toe, so I splinted it with a masking tape booty last night. He's doing great with the splint, very active, and no one's pecking at it or him.

How long do I keep him splinted? I had originally read 3ish days, but now im seeing suggestions that I might just keep this splint on until it stars to fall off or he stars to pick at it.

And in total, let's say I'm correcting a broken toe at the joint, how long should he stay splinted?

well how long have you had it on for now? if you have had it on a couple days I would take it off and wee how it looks with him/her walking, if you just put it on I would go a few days and check few days and check until it gets about as good as you think it will get, I had one chick with a toe on the inside bent completely backwards and so I left it a couple days and it straitened on its own.

Thanks for the reply! I just put the splint on last night, not even 24 hours ago. He's doing fine with it on, so I'll leave it in place until Tuesday evening after work (which would be 3 days on) unless something changes between now and then.

Right you are. He was picking at the second splint last night, so I took it off (he fell asleep in my hands while I was working on unsticking it) and he's FINE. Winning!

Awesome good job, I have a serama that hatched today and it has a toe that is wrapping under the rest of its foot, so it will probably have to get booty on its foot..

Not a bad idea. You might also look into giving it B2 (Rivoflavin), as feet curling is an indication of a deficiency that is easily corrected but that can lead to paralysis and wry neck if left alone. Adding powder to their water should do the trick too.
