10 Cornish X eggs in the incubator!

Would the appearance of this much larger chick validate the point that CrazyTalk was trying to make, albeit in a heavy handed overly dogmatic way?...Several years ago a missionary from, I beleive China, worked several years on a similar project....He called his birds something like Corndel Cross....They seemed to be really good meat chickens before the project ended, I recall...Seems like he used either New Hampshire or Deleware Males....You are doing something very interesting to say the least....As stupid as this may sound, you might try crossing a good Show Quality Dark Cornish BANTAM male with a few of your Cornish Cross hens....You will be amazed at the size and breasts of the of

I believe that there is a thread on the corndel chickens. People were looking for them. They fizzled out when he went to China.

Nice duluthralphie! Crazytalk is suspect...

I haven't had time to fix the chicken pen outside, pig broke his pen so that first, so they are still inside in my laundry room.
I feed them medicated chick starter and greek yogurt as a treat to help their healthy flora..

OK...NOW I came up with some names so Crazytalk can be happy....

Cornish X2 (as in squared) Yes, it's math, keep up Crazytalk..just cause I'm redneck don't mean I'm dumb.
Cornish XX
Cornish YUM
Finger licken
Fried Chicken

Get in my pan
Get on my plate

Chicken wings and baseball games
White Chicken
White chicken brown butt

OH and my favorite..... FREE!!!!!!!!!!! A little patience and a little work and I raise a healthy stock... OH Chicken Stock, another good name....

How about Cornish X...

For us free thinkers... Thank you so much for "getting me"

Perfect - the names and the point made! Thanks for the laugh!

Just make sure it is a true JG and not a hatchery JG, because they have big issues with growth as is.

I think a White Rock would be the best.. I would love to keep them white, because the pin feathers that are coloured look terrible.

Note that my Cornish Cross Cross is now 24 weeks old and started laying at 19ish weeks. She was broody at 22 weeks old, so I am guessing she was laying at least 3 weeks prior.

I had two of them, but the fox got the bigger girl.

There is a difference between hatchery JG and regular ones? I was just going to order some from a hatchery.

You can get CornDogs at the state fair here, I think they may even have some chicken in them....

The difference in hatchery and breeder is seen in the new White Plymouth Rocks I bought. Slightly younger by a few weeks than my 4 hatchery rocks, they are at least 30% bigger. The cockerel is huge already and will be a 15 pounder when he is a year old or so. Blosi and Jwip are quality birds. Pay extra for your start and raise babies every year. I have a set up with climbing roosts with 2.5" round bars and they can't handle them so they sleep on the floor until I can build 18" high 2 x 4" roosts with 4" flat. Something that they can steady themselves on. I wish I could get pictures for you. Blindingly white and so fluffy and shaped well. I'm so incredibly lucky to have been able to buy them locally. Of course, I'm eating beans until payday.

Dang that is a nice Roo!

My black Australorps have way skinnier legs and are not as "stately" looking as that one. How old is he?
Not sure, the second one was a really popular chicken on here. Stan the Man.. I think he was at least a year. The first is not mine. I don't breed JG, but have admired them in shows. :) You can find nice pictures on the Jersey Giant exhibition thread.

While showing is not popular to everyone, the standard of perfection was put there for a reason. JG are meant to be very large. They are called giants after all.. Hatchery JG look nearly identical to hatchery Australorps except their feet colour. That shouldn't be.

I really have no idea about standards or what a real chicken person looks for in a chicken.

I just know what I like. We had chickens when I was kids but I would assume they were extra stock from my grandparents farm. In the entire time I lived with my parents ( until age 18) I remember having only two purebred animals, both were Holsteins.

I'm not sure how "Hybrids won't breed true so you shouldn't expect them to be the same as their parents" is overly dogmatic - its a basic principle of breeding programs in every species of livestock.

And yes, this sort of variability is something you should expect.

YAWN*****

We will breed for the traits we want. We may get them we may not. BUT but using selective breeding we will get real close to it.....bye
