Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice and how to deal with one of our hens. She hasn't laid in a couple days, I'd say maybe a little under a week now. There are no protrusions and she isn't limping or anything, so we don't really think she could be bound. We just noticed that she looks a little more slow than usual--shes usually VERY active, alert, and curious, but nowadays she's been a little more withdrawn than usual. Her eyes and nostrils are clear, and aside from her comb being a tad paler than usual she looks good appearance-wise.

Her poop is completely liquid and it's this solid green color(the feathers around her vent are kind of matted down with it, but her actual vent is clear).

We've brought her inside the house now to monitor her food. We've been giving her electrolytes in her water(which she's been drinking very well, which is a relief), though she showed to be struggling with the pellets of her food. We just soaked some of her food in warm water and she's eating that now pretty well, it seemed like the problem was with the size of the pellets themselves(though she used to be able to eat fine).

She's still relatively awake and alert, but somethings off with her and we don't know what to do other than giving her electrolytes, mashing up her food, and giving her some boiled egg yolk. Any clues on why she could be displaying these symptoms / what this could be? All comments and responses are heavily appreciated!! Attached is a picture of her most recent poo.

Here come a lot of questions:

  • Did you open her beak and look inside if something got stuck?
  • Did you feel her crop, is it big and hard or rather squishy or like an air filled balloon?
  • When did you last de-worm her?
  • Was she vaccinated against Marek's?
  • Did you check for lice and mites?
  • Did you or a neighbour set out rat/mice poison lately?
  • How does her belly look/feel, is it swollen? And if so, hard or like a waterfilled balloon?

Thank you for the response! We have opened her beak and everything looks fine in there. We felt around her crop and it feels normal, definitely not hard or firm, maybe a tad squishy. She hasn't been dewormed and she is not vaccinated for Mareks. There's no signs of lice or mites. From what I know of, no rat poison. Belly looks normal and not hard or swollen. We'll definitely recheck her crop and belly just to confirm that everything is good, but so far there's no signs of hardness and firmness for either of those.

To find out if her crop empties properly, it is best to separate her in a wire crate over night, without food or water and then feel her crop again in the morning before she had anything to eat or drink.

Worms can be the cause for a lot of issues, so you might consider a deworming.

And look at the milling date on the feed bag and inspect the feed, does it smell good, no insects or mites etc.? Feed that is off can cause severe problems, so always check the dates and take a good sniff before feeding the chickens.

How is your hen today?
This is tasnim2005 sister. She’s still alive, but she’s the exact same as she was when this post was made. We been trying everything, garlic and vinegar in water, vitamin E, electrolytes, mashing up food so she can eat, Diatamacious Earth, and more. In fact she’s not the exact same, she’s gotten worse! I don’t know what happened but today she can barely stand up, she just drops to the ground and her comb is super pale again, I don’t know what to do! We just gave her another Vitamin E so she can get up. Her Wing is also drooping and is open. She is very lethargic

Do you have a rooster that is quite rough with the hens?

If so, check her back carefully, she might have a problem in the lumbar vertebrae area which is prone to trauma.

No we don’t have any rooster, but we have 2 really aggressive hens. I don’t think it’s the hens though because when we did have our rooster (which was pretty gentle) the hens weren’t aggressive and she was still a little lethargic and depressed looking. She actually just pooped and this is what it looks like. Any ideas??

Also, do you think she has coccidiosis and is it safe to give her Corid even if she doesn’t have coccidiosis? Her symptoms look pretty similar to coccidiosis and we do have Corid at hand but I want to know if it’s safe to give it to her even if she doesn’t have it Because I dont want to make any mistakes

I have not experience using Corid. In case of (suspected) coccidiosis I use Sulfadimethoxin 3,0 g. This also works for infections of the digestive system of other origin such as Salmonella, Coli bacteria and all kind of infections of the respiratory system etc.
