Bats and Purple Martins are worthless at mosquito control

That said, we should still provide housing for bats and martins since our actions have decimated their populations.

I'm a mosquito, tick and chigger magnet.

People invite me to garden parties to keep the mosquitos off of the other guests.

I want bats so bad.

~~ Maybe you can just invite me over.

I spent a November and December in Louisiana once and was shocked at the size of the roaches in the barracks. They told me, "those are tiny, wait till summer".

I was glad I got shipped overseas in January.

Have any of you tried mosquito coils in the coops?
They really work well. I always use them when I'm in Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean.
I usually stay in traditional housing with no screens or glass on windows, just sticks. The coils usually keep them out and I keep them burning all day and night.

That gave me a laugh.

They worked fine most nights in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Preserve where the mosquitos were thicker than anything I've ever seen.

Except if it rained at night then mosquito netting was imperative. I turned on the flashlight under the net canopy and the mosquitos were solid on it.
I just thought they would suffice for a chicken coop.

Ditto here, can't keep bayou water away so the army of blood suckers continues.

I have severe reactions to bites and whole limbs will swell, eyes swell shut if bit neck or above. It's insane and frickin ridiculous. Never in my life (i have been an outdoor gal all my life!) Have I encountered mosquitos as wicked and large as they are here in Louisiana. I loved in Florida and we thought it was bad....nooooo noooooo noooooo. Here there is a "new" species that's come to light in recent years. It's double the size, loud-brown, has a bite that feels like a wasp sting and hunts during the day in the sun...my husband smack one hard, twice that got him and the sucker flew away, shaky, but c'mon! Can't even squish them!

I need a serious solution to mosquitos this year. It's gonna be bad Kuntry, I've been reading and we could lose animals. I can't afford to net ALL areas and even if we did, we both free range. :/

I have zappers set in two places AWAY from coops because they Attract bugs to kill and zap. I don't want a meal found by the bug on the way to the zapper near a coop.

I'm going to try the vanilla car fresh trees in a coop I know 3 people that Swear it works and they're local to me so know ours are super evil.

I don't want to fog...scares me but I may have to, is it truly effective? Worth it to keep ding it I suppose right? We have an outdoor rabbitry too now I need to protect :th

We have bats, they do help but honestly aren't a huge dent. Their diet varies and there are Soooooo many bugs here its a buffet. Tiny snacks aren't top of the list. But! Some is better than none gone so we figure a few hundred here, a few thousand there adds up?

I gotta figure somethin effective out ASAP
I hate the mosquitoes in Louisiana!!!!! :barnie They are so big and they are fierce. During mosquito season (every day it's hot), I go out in full armor. I wear a long sleeve lined wind breaker, long warm up pants, gloves, a ski mask, a hat, long socks and boots. I have to cover ever inch of my body. If not, they will eat me alive. And I feel so sorry for the birds because as they try to sleep, the mosquitoes are eating them alive. Their combs are dripping with blood. It's horrible. That's what I fog and mist their coops every single night.

Here is a pic of a skeeter that I killed September 2011. And this is a small one. They are even bigger than that.

Fogger. This is what I use to fog the perimeter of my property.

Quote: I bought some recently at the grocery store. They have started disassembling the "parts" so that its a little homogeneus.... Still tastes good though there are fewer Identiifialbe parts in there. There is a grocery store that caters to people on a budget Called Food for Less. They carry those bits and pieces in the food Isle no Regular grocery store will carry any more. Like fresh Pig ears and feet. Tripe ... Ox tails, Chitlins, Pork intestines, Masa ready for making tortillas, Mexican Lard,

Mom while not a very good cook does do my Dads moms recipe for Tripe.... OMG its soo good..... Stinks the whole house up though. For those who dont know Tripe is cows stommach. First she boils it for hours to tenderize it then she drains it and lets it cool Then its cut into strips about six inches long and an inch and a half wide. It is seasoned and dredged in cornmeal Then fried in Bacon grease till its crisp..... I have to make it at least one time one of these days.... Kind of a bucket list thing....

See we do have winter items down here...just not for the cold...

It always rains here and we have 3 types that I have seen. I'm sure there are more breeds of them here but what I have seen are black normal size, tiger stripe with west nile twice the normal size, and brown ones that are commonly the size of a quarter or bigger. Some of them look like the size of a wasp coming near you. I wish I could get rid of them for good but it is all I can do just to reduce the population in the coop.
