100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

Bekissed you of all ppl should know they taste like....Chicken bah ha ha Funny you should mention ur dog thats exactly the image that comes to mind...a dog chewing on a bone hmmmm

The burning ? is do ppl really eat these and if so WHY? Ive heard rumor some do but recently I saw them at Walmart so maybe its true!?? What.do they taste like

During the depression they were used for soup stock as well as eaten. I haven't tried eating them but I do on occasion make a stock with them. It's not something I would go out and buy but if it is there I will use it.

I agree soo much. Been on the recieving end of some of those do gooders. am emotionally scarred from it.

I wont have cats ever again.... Keeping them indoors is cruel letting them outdoors is a death sentence....

My dogs have always been indoor outdoor dogs. Free access to a doggy door and a fenced yard. I choose Not to have scent hounds because of their body odor. I do want a livestock guardian and when I spoke to animal control asked him about it.... He laughed.... "rules say you have to provide a dog house.... weather or not they use it" He was a farm boy and knew the drill.

BTW its against the law here to have a dog on a tether that is stationary.... So if you want to tie your dog out it has to be to an over head cable....

I think cats are very cool animals but I won't have one again either. They're the cause of as many extinctions as all the other stupid things humans do together, especially on islands.
Im a P.E.T.A. myself People For Eating Tasty Animals ha Those people actually have been labeled terrorist by the gov. I had a few comments 1 On the bat house Ive heard if you dont use guano its hard to attract themto a bat house for what its worth. theres been a big die off of some bats due to a fungus. 2 we put up purple martin houses for mosquitoes. They eat their weight in skitters a day alledgedly They are colorful and entertaining 3 I dont believe bug zappers would be.harmful to your bird unless they tore up the zapper the skitter flies into the cage then gets zapped. Ive seen hand held zappers at walmart in the garden center as well. Just sayin...
Yes and no.

I like animals, next to my peas and mashed potatoes.

Purple martins don't eat mosquitos at all. Firstly, they don't fly at the same time of day nor in the same space/elevation. They do eat their weight in bugs but they don't discriminate, so eat good and bad bugs. Studies show that they eat primarily beetles and flies.
Similar to preying mantis that also eat both good and bad bugs (and slow ones at that).

The claim that they eat 2,000 mosquitos a day has no factual basis. It was probably just made up by the companies that make purple martin houses.

ETA "It is estimated that the five major martin house manufactures (i.e., Heath, Nature House, Coates, Mac Industries, and Birds Limited, Inc.) sell about 125,000 units combined, annually. When purchased with a pole, most of these houses retail for between $130 and $280 each. If you assume that the average martin house sells for around $200, then over 25 million dollars is generated by the sale of these commercial houses, annually. If you also factor in the handful of plastic gourd manufacturers, the natural gourd sellers, and the "cottage industry" wooden martin house builders, you end up with a housing industry that may generate as much as 30 million dollars, annually! That's a lot of bread to cater to just one bird!" from Purplemartin.org

That's good payback though since 2 stupid moves by humans (bringing starlings and house sparrows to the US) nearly wiped out the martin and other secondary cavity nesting swallows. It's population is only 10% of what it was at the time of these invasive species importations.

The below studies couldn't find mosquitos in the birds. It further said that even if they did eat that many, it would take 2,000 PMs to eat the emergent mosquitos of a single brood in a single acre of marshland.

Bats are worse at mosquito control About 1% of their diet is mosquitos.

That said, we should still provide housing for bats and martins since our actions have decimated their populations.

I have a rain garden that collects most of the water that comes from my roof. I keep it stocked with minnows for mosquito control during mosquito season.

I spent the first 19 years of my life without a single mosquito bite. The last 6? Probably thousands

. I sat out watching the chickensfor 10 minutes yesterday, and they got me 8 times. I'm just glad I don't have the awful reactions I used to have.

Screening wouldn't help me much, the floor of part of the coop is slats backed with chicken wire to let poop pass through to the run floor. Screen wouldn't work.
I'm a mosquito, tick and chigger magnet.

People invite me to garden parties to keep the mosquitos off of the other guests.

chicken feet are loaded with all that stuff that makes chicken stock jell. they are very good for you.

The stock is so rich its just like gelatin when you are done.

edited to add: There are many many more recipes in the Asian cooking sites as well.
