100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

   It's whatever they are acclimated to and, it could have something to do with owners as well.....I've noticed that people who never acclimatize themselves to the seasons and stay indoors a lot for winter months with the heat on 80* will also think their dogs will get cold when left outside to live and will bring them indoors so they won't "get cold".  When they do that, they render the dogs as helpless against the cold weather as they are, so it's all self-inflicted.

I see dogs tied to a box out in -20F, no bedding in their dog boxes and they are just sitting next to the box like it's a sunny day.  My dog has a very warm, deeply bedded dog house with hay bales stacked all around it and a flap that holds in his heat but he's still out there rolling in the snow in subzero weather, happy as a lark, running to and fro with his bones and deer hides and marking his territory.

I think maybe southern flock owners are more likely to heat and insulate a coop when cold weather comes instead of letting their chickens grow accustomed to the cold.

We had someone in our tiny town arrested for animal cruelty for tying their dog to a tree in 18 degree weather last month.  He froze to death.  It's the humidity that does them in.

Awwwwwwww. Poor dog.

For skeeters how about Shade cloth or Window screening...  for what its worht Mosquitos are attracted to Carbon Dioxide.   Breathe out and they will come..... :lau

I guess about this time is not to mention the last time I had a mosquito bite was about ten years ago.     :gig ..um

Yes, someone mentioned that a few years ago. I think that is a great idea but it's expensive to screen all of the coops that I have.

:( found a dead bat on the patio today

You don't even wanna know. I research and find all kinda stuff to do and use. We will sometimes burn trash/wood in our metal 55 gallon containers and the smoke will keep the skeeters away. I also fog the perimeter far away from the animals. I will order Skin So Soft from Avon and spray the area. Since people can put it on their skin, then I use it on my animals. You name it, I have done it . My poutls got bit really bad one year and got dry pox and then wet pox and I almost lost 12 babies. After that I vowed to never let that happen again. I also have zappers out there to zap the skeeters. The next thing is to get bats. I was coming from Lake Charles on Saturday and I saw someone selling bat houses but I couldn't stop because I was in a rush trying to run errands. I am actively seeking to buy bat houses and put in the chicken yard.

Pics?

I wonder what happen to the little guy. I have been wanting bats since 2011. I started a thread about them back then.

I spent the first 19 years of my life without a single mosquito bite. The last 6? Probably thousands

. I sat out watching the chickensfor 10 minutes yesterday, and they got me 8 times. I'm just glad I don't have the awful reactions I used to have.

Screening wouldn't help me much, the floor of part of the coop is slats backed with chicken wire to let poop pass through to the run floor. Screen wouldn't work.

Bat houses are easy to build. Here There used to be alot of them.... wed ride for an evening ride out in the hills. As we rode the horses would scare up buts and the bats would swoup around eating the bugs as we rode.

I havent seen a bat in a while. Usually they swoup around street lights. Ours migrate up from Mexico,

I have heard there fore its not verified that the same fungus killing bats has been found in honey bees.

Just coming in from feeding the broilers. I took some pics of them in their pen while they were eating . Here ya go.

This is the total weight of the FF that I put out for them this evening. Still not sure how much water was in this batch. When I start another batch, I will document the amount of water.

For anyone who is interested and this may be TMI (too much info), this is how much the 2 chicken feet weighed.
Bahahahaha. Yes that was a burning question 1.5 oz

I don't want to hijack but I had to comment.
I was serving in Fort Polk, LA for a couple months back in the early 70s. I worked in an office that had equal numbers of civilians and army folk. They got about an inch (maybe less) of a wet snow on warm pavement and the civilians were petrified. The officers went around to all the soldiers (from all parts of the country) and asked if anyone had experience driving in snow. We each had a civilian to drive home in their car. We drove their cars back to the post and the next morning we drove back to pick them up for work and the drama was over.
That's one of the most bizarre things I've been involved in. (Northerners would understand)
The lady I took home lived about 40 miles from the post and compared to MO weather, it was like driving on dry pavement.
Not to hijack this thread, but I had to laugh at this...

I was just in Portland (OR) at OHSU for a medical appointment. While getting my blood drawn, the staff in the hall became very loud and excited. Looking out the window, there was a snow flurry. The entire clinic staff was glued to the window, so worried and upset. The tech drawing my blood knew we had driven a long ways (250ish miles) and was worried about us, kept asking if we knew anyone in town we could stay with "to ride out the storm" instead of driving home. Snow flurry was done by the time my appt was over, like 30 minutes, not a trace of snow and the sun was shining (almost as exciting in Portland as snow, I know!!). It was cute how excited they all got, and so sweet how worried that tech was
