100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

#1 way is to put sand in the coop! I got rid of pine shavings because the humidity in the summer allowed the mosquitoes to breed in them. ACV in the water to prevent breeding. If all else fails, hang a vanilla tree car air freshener in the coop.

I tried vanilla last summer, but I will try the air fresheners to see if that makes a difference. It got to the point I would go into their coop an hour before dusk to spray flying insect killer in there. There is usually so much standing water in ditches around here, sand wouldn't make much difference.

It's whatever they are acclimated to and, it could have something to do with owners as well.....I've noticed that people who never acclimatize themselves to the seasons and stay indoors a lot for winter months with the heat on 80* will also think their dogs will get cold when left outside to live and will bring them indoors so they won't "get cold". When they do that, they render the dogs as helpless against the cold weather as they are, so it's all self-inflicted.

I see dogs tied to a box out in -20F, no bedding in their dog boxes and they are just sitting next to the box like it's a sunny day. My dog has a very warm, deeply bedded dog house with hay bales stacked all around it and a flap that holds in his heat but he's still out there rolling in the snow in subzero weather, happy as a lark, running to and fro with his bones and deer hides and marking his territory.

I think maybe southern flock owners are more likely to heat and insulate a coop when cold weather comes instead of letting their chickens grow accustomed to the cold.

We had someone in our tiny town arrested for animal cruelty for tying their dog to a tree in 18 degree weather last month. He froze to death. It's the humidity that does them in.

I have to laugh I was born and raised in Chicago/Milwakee area and was to used to that weather when I got in Louisiana December of 85 I put on shorts and a long sleeve T-shirt, drove people nuts, they were all like "aren't you cold" ? I was like "notherner recently transplanted, lol" But the killer factor here is the wet humid stuff called sleet! Louisianan's they brave bucket rainfalls (I do mean 10 gallon bucket) scares me how fast they will go, sleet too! But if a snow flake falls... SCHOOL"S out! The chill and the heat are very intensified here in northern La. due to the humidity. As a result mildew and mold will set up in a heart beat! The chill from the wet, the 100 + days = me hoping to get the right combination for happy chicks. That are "in the mail"

:( found a dead bat on the patio today

You don't even wanna know. I research and find all kinda stuff to do and use. We will sometimes burn trash/wood in our metal 55 gallon containers and the smoke will keep the skeeters away. I also fog the perimeter far away from the animals. I will order Skin So Soft from Avon and spray the area. Since people can put it on their skin, then I use it on my animals. You name it, I have done it . My poutls got bit really bad one year and got dry pox and then wet pox and I almost lost 12 babies. After that I vowed to never let that happen again. I also have zappers out there to zap the skeeters. The next thing is to get bats. I was coming from Lake Charles on Saturday and I saw someone selling bat houses but I couldn't stop because I was in a rush trying to run errands. I am actively seeking to buy bat houses and put in the chicken yard.

10 years ago??? My kids come in looking like they have chicken pox sometimes. I think that is the major downside to this state, mosquitoes come in swarms here because of all the water and high humidity.

My yearly rainfall last year was 3 inches.... High desert norm for me is 9. Here closer to the coast the annual rainfall should be around 10-12 inches This year we got 9. There are areas where mosquitos exist, but I dont live near any of those.... Uusally closer to the coast. Or near golf courses. They irrigate.

That would explain it! Sometimes I think we get that a day here.

Just coming in from feeding the broilers. I took some pics of them in their pen while they were eating . Here ya go.

This is the total weight of the FF that I put out for them this evening. Still not sure how much water was in this batch. When I start another batch, I will document the amount of water.

For anyone who is interested and this may be TMI (too much info), this is how much the 2 chicken feet weighed.

Im a P.E.T.A. myself People For Eating Tasty Animals ha Those people actually have been labeled terrorist by the gov. I had a few comments 1 On the bat house Ive heard if you dont use guano its hard to attract themto a bat house for what its worth. theres been a big die off of some bats due to a fungus. 2 we put up purple martin houses for mosquitoes. They eat their weight in skitters a day alledgedly They are colorful and entertaining 3 I dont believe bug zappers would be.harmful to your bird unless they tore up the zapper the skitter flies into the cage then gets zapped. Ive seen hand held zappers at walmart in the garden center as well. Just sayin...
