:(((

And, hey, you'll get past this. We learn from our experiences, both good and bad ones. Seems sometimes the bad ones might outweigh the good ones but that's not really the case. I think we (me) just dwell too much on the bad ones and not enough on the good ones. Make lemonade out of lemons....take it as a challenge to enhance, tweak, and strengthen your coop's security...be creative. Do the same for your run. And along the way be thinking about what you will replace the chickens with...more RIR? Maybe some EE's? Barred Rocks? And, are you going to incubate eggs, buy day-old chicks, pullets, hens? That will be fun to do. But, I'd wait until at least the coop is secured before bringing more birds in. You'll get it there, I have no doubt!

The easiest way to deal with a predator is not to "deal" with it, but to eliminate it's point of entry. We live in their world too.
So sorry about your hens. Same thing happened to me a few days ago. :(((

Chicken coops and pens are actually death traps for chickens. If you let your birds free range, or have a large fenced in pen with trees it is best to shut the chicken coop if you are going to be home late. That way the chickens can at least try to run away or fly into a tree
