12th Annual 2021 BYC New Year's Day Hatch-Along!

Pics
You are really going to be on a hatching adventure!

I did that for a couple of years when I was hatching for a local breeder

the things we do for kids!
actually I LOVE hatching and having a specific goal for the kids probably keeps me from going off the deep end??? I mean right now I have to keep 2 pens open for black turkeys breeding pens, one for muscovy ducks, one for "mule ducks" one for black necked neck chickens and 2 more for "dual" purpose meat birds, so see how many breeding pens I have but can not use for random things like my "sexlink" projects( ok so I do have a pen set up with delaware hens covered by red necked necks, another set up with black austrolorps covered by splash necked necks, one set up with a birchen marans over an assortment of hens, and my cream legbar cockerels covering everything in my "green/blue" layer pen..... I might have a problem???
naaaaaa

Too Funny!

I can't have a setup like that in the City. The limit here is 6 Hens

that is why I will never live in the city..... ok I am a blessed person to have a little acreage.

of course part of my dream is being able to "fowl" full time and have it pay for life, probably not going to happen but still....
You’re so full of knowledge and practical hands on experience I don’t doubt you may stumble on a way to do it. :fl

Hoping in! Just completed my December egg hatching - "RUG" [Rooster of Unknown Genetics] over (see Sig). 4 Successes, 2 Infertile, 6 Fails. Incubator has been cleaned, dried, disinfected, and restarting this AM with fresh eggs as the girls deposit them. Will likely collect over the next two/three days to fill the incubator (which should bump me right into the target date of 12/31 for at least some of the hatchings).

I wish everyone more fortune than I have had in past hatching.

if I fail it will not be for lack of trying.... we currently have a farmers market booth rented for the year( our farmers market is year round so starting this past may through this upcoming april) we have been offering farm fresh eggs( yes I have my egg license according to the state of colorado) and some farm raised and processed poultry( colorado allows us to work under a federal exemption and process them ourselves and offer them for sale to the end user as long as we raised them on our place) and anything else my daughters decide to make, such as baked goods(working under the cottage foods class we took) and some jewelry and seasonal produce(when the girls decided to harvest and take it to market cuz mom will enable but not do all the work if they get the profit)

so yeah we are making a valid effort of making it work.
I have also become involved in the local fair with the poultry division, someone has to step up and head up the division so that the kids get the opportunity to participate and as someone once told me, "don't stand back and complain because no one else will step up if you are not willing to do it"

I just hope to influence a few of the local kids to set goals and work twords them... in a real world sense not a computer generated game.... so many are only offered a virtual world but not allowed to experience the satisfaction of actually growing something live and in person.

keep trying, even the best hatchers have faced failed hatches.... I know several of mine have been bust but when you get things figured out and begin to see the babies that you set mature and lay or crow.... just WOW! keep moving forward

Welcome!

I'm in... just set 8 Khaki Campbell eggs (was supposed to be 15, but USPS shook the box, and 7 eggs were busted... not sure if the 8 are now viable, but we'll know by this Saturday, since I set them last Saturday night (12/5), to see if any develop. But I also have 15 (Cream Legbar, Lavendor Orps, Welsummer) chicken eggs going in Saturday, the 12th. We'll see when they hatch whether they'll be NYD birds or not!
