Seeing you post (location) gives me ANOTHER contest idea.. guess which STATE will set the most eggs or HATCH the most chicks! Come on California, let's DO this!

Hey y'all, and @ronott1 probably not the best place to ask this, but while we're all waiting for chicks, does sex-linking work in reverse? I have a barred male and black females and I'm getting dots on half their heads. Usually I have barred hens, so I'm used to those being male. I did not think there'd be any dots - and what do those dots mean if the male is the only barred bird?

Nope..

Maybe your black females have one copy of the barring gene (hiding).. it only takes one copy for MALES to show it. Takes two copies for females to be barred.

My black females are all Marans. No barring there. And literally half the chicks have dots and half don't. It's a mystery.

I'm setting on March 27. A little late, but I'm trying to time the hatch with my kids' spring break. This happened to me last year too - just a little too far out of the contest dates, because of spring break, and I didn't qualify last year, but there was some debate as to whether I should be allowed in this time... So seeing my name on the list, but then it says "no" for whether I'm setting, now I'm confused.

I set them last Monday and they were all clear. I candle usually on day 7 to 10. Being 21 days to hatch the Chickens should have not been clear. But all my Duck eggs are looking great... lol

I usually have to set a few days sooner as my incubator is in a room that is 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the house. SO it drops the temp in the incubator a bit. Currently the bottom shelf is 98 degrees. the top shelf in the same bator is 99.5 So a bit cooler than normal.

Ah, I get the challenge collecting numbers and all.. and voted you and the kiddo's included for Easter hatch and will be IN my either way!

I thought/hoped MAYBE you had some presetting fertility detection secret!
