13 Week EE Injured (17 wks now) ~Vet Update Not Good~ *Graphic Pics *

Ugh!! I never thought to look up the temperature for myself. I did think that having a high fever accounted for the bad shivering she did the night before. Seemed logical. I did see the look of shock on his face when he saw the temp. So, obviously he didn't know what he was talking about in respect to this. No, he wasn't an avian vet. He did say he had had chickens all his life, so I assumed he at least knew something as basic as their normal temperature.

Dang, this was one of the main reasons I decided not to try to further fight the infection. Bleah!

Thank you for the information. Although, it saddens me to know that maybe she didn't have to die, I'm glad to be more informed for the future.

Next time (Hopefully there will never be a next time), I will find a vet that specializes in birds.

I'm having a hard time today. Didn't think it had affected me this much, but I'm in kind of a funk today. I keep feeling like there's something I need to do.

I'm going to work outside today. Going to finish putting the new latches on the coop and put the finishing touches on the duck house. Maybe being outside will help me get out of this funk.

Thanks again for the support. It means the world to me.

Unfortunately, we don't have one. It's one of the things we would like to get at some point. Would a b-b gun work? My sister offered me the loan of hers if I wanted.

You know, your city animal control will probably loan you a live trap. Ours does. Honestly, I'd invest in one. I've learned that a good live trap is way cheaper than meds and heartbreak.

I wish I were quite brave enough to kill possoms with a gun. Apparently I'm having too hard a time with it. Yesterday was too much for me. So I'll be live trapping them now.

And honestly I'm going to buy one of those poles that animal control uses in case we find some not in a trap like this one we caught 2 nights ago. I learned the scary and accidental way that possums absolutely cannot get out of 50 gallon barrels. Put horse sweet feed in a 50 gallon barrel; they can't resist it, and they can't get out. It doesn't trap cats.

The ones we can't trap will end up in the barrel until the city comes out to get them that day.

I took a mare into a university veterinarian clinic. I even had a second vet come look at her. I followed their advice and put her down......
The very next day the vet student calls me and says they type of pneumonia my mare had was treatable with antibiotics.....they never even told me there was a chance or that there was a test pending....

We do the best we can with what knowledge we have at hand.

Oh, that's just awful! Can you imagine if the "experts" treated people the same way? I'm sorry you lost your horse.

Well, I personally would be pretty angry that the vet would not at least go to the internet in his office to check normal temperature ranges for a chicken before making such an arbitrary diagnosis. I would definitely let him know, if only for future clients, and indicate to him that you're not totally happy and that this outcome might have been unnecessary. It might have been a blessing for you and Jennifer at this point, but he still needs to know that while we call it "PRACTICING medicine" that his patients expect him to do as little 'guessing' as possible.
I am glad to know the body temps for chickens now, and I too, would not have known any different had a vet told me this. On the up side, we all now know to double check what we're told in the future.
I do believe that things happen for a reason. Both you and your chick have taught us all lessons. We learned pererverance , dedication, responsibility, kindness, compassion, and sharing. Your children and husband have seen, first hand, what a hero is all about. As a mother of four, I know how difficult it can be to teach all of these things. You've done it by example!

Wow, I don't think I'd go so far as to call myself a hero. But I do hope I have taught my children something that will stick with them for all their lives. I too, am a mother of four with kids ranging from 18 years to 19 months. I hope I have passed on what I learned from my mom about the value of not giving up.

I live in a pretty small town. We barely have our own Humane Society, I don't think we even have an animal control. Also, even if we did, I wouldn't want to involve the city, because I'm pretty sure I'm illegal. According to the county regs, I'm not (except for the unexpected rooster), but a couple years ago, I had called the city and they said no. That being said, I'm not sure they knew what they were talking about, they didn't look anything up and just gave me a quick answer. At this point, I'm just more like don't ask and apologize if they say anything. I know my neighbor's don't care. I've made sure. They don't even mind the rooster.

I honestly don't know if I'd be able to shoot an opossum either. But, I certainly want to make sure it never comes back. I'm still waiting on the call back from the wildlife place. That's the problem with places like that, since it's all volunteer run, it takes forever to get in touch with a live person.
