Safety holes at the beginning of incubation can cause them to stick and shrink wrap. They should only be used at the end of a hatch as a last ditch effort to save a chick. I have had that work once and the chick was missing it's egg tooth.

It creates a condition where you need to assist more during the hatch if you poke holes in the egg. Also, they need a bit of O2 depravation.

I have seen some of those safety holes, poked in with a screw that were huge! With blood coming out of the hole. Pictures like that make me sad.
Yeah that’s been an issue…..even being extremely careful, it’s soooo scary. I’ve lost 2 so far. 1st I didn’t get the bill exposed with safety hole and another that gave up before I could get it unshrinkwrapped. I’ve removed a bit more shell on 4ish and remoistened the membrane. I still have a couple more to double check but they’re still chewing

But I lost my first attempt because the 2 that pipped and I assisted hatch only survived to 1 and 2 weeks and the ones I didn’t assist were DIS 😭
