16-mo old BO hen internal layer? update: Paris necropsy pics (graphic)

Yes, I know that 22ga needles are pretty tiny for Pen G. But Cyn said she used 22's and I worried about bruising Paris too much with big needles. The 20's are easier, both to put air in the bottle, and to inject, but you should inject slowly anyhow. So I decided to use a 22. I bought an 18 and it was way too big for my comfort. In nursing, we used those big needles for thick liquids like steroids and such. Pen G is sort of midrange in the thickness department. Now that Paris is feeling well enough to object and fight me a bit about the injection, I want it too hurt as little as possible. Otherwise I might end the round of antibiotics too soon, just on account of not being able to hold her still.

edited for clarity. I'm a little tired.

Well, I do think this breakfast in bed is going to get to be a bad habit for her. I named her Paris because she didn't seem to have much of a personality, the blonde girl who just followed the current leader as long as it was good for her social standing. It turned out that she was especially good at alerting the flock to any threat, so she earned her keep. She might even end up being cuddly after all this holding. Or not. Maybe she will just demand to be spoiled.

Glad she continues to improve. What have your cats thought of all this uproar?

Next time I go the the feed store I'll pick up some 20 and 22 gauge needles- I like to have a supply of things I might need.

Since it is a beautifully sunny day here, Paris has been out in the yard this afternoon, scratching and eating weeds and bugs. The other girls are in the pen, and putting up quite a racket seeing her out while they are in. Her poops are still runny, but no longer any yellow. They are green and white, normal color, but too runny. I wonder if this is just all that fluid finding its way out of the tissue. She is barely swollen anymore. She will continue to be a house chicken until the antibiotics are done and she is pooping normally. I will keep offering yogurt in the hope of heading off any thrush-like infection after this massive antibiotic treatment.

I really thought she was a goner on Monday. I can barely believe she is outside acting like a chicken again. Huge thanks to everyone who expressed their concern and took the time to give me stellar advice. You all are the best!!

I'm so glad to hear she's doing better. Hoping for a full recovery.

Normally she likes tomatoes, but she's being ridiculously picky right now. I tried putting her beloved blueberries in yogurt, but she only ate one. The others are sitting there.

("yes, your royal highness. I'll wash them off right away.") Since the blueberries are frozen, I can thaw just a few at a time. It isn't terribly expensive that way. She is pecking at the crumbles with gusto, so I guess we'll stick to blueberries and crumbles. At least, when she went to bed, her crop was palpable. I wish it had been full, but at least she had enough in it to find it. Maybe today she will fill it.

ETA -- and, during the night she had another yellow, watery poop, but then one teeny tiny normal one. Yay! (If my friends knew, I cheer for poop!
