18 week old Blue Ameraucana, thought hen ... ?rooster

I would say roo, as well. My americauna roo's tail feathers started to curve before the saddle feathers came in all of the way. In the pic, his/her tail is down, so it is hard to see, but those saddles do look defined. Beautiful bird! Hope you can keep him.

I'd sure take that roo off your hands

I'm looking for a home for him, but I think his breeder is gong to take him back. I was looking at him the other day and was thinking, hmmm his tail looks different, his neck looks longer, and he looks all gangly - so that is when I started thinking boy!

I think this breed is hard to sex sometimes until older. I do think the sickle feathers are looking rooish. Here is my EE rooster, and there was no doubt about him at a very young age.

I'd wait a couple weeks before rehoming -- I think it's still iffy. The comb is pretty small for an 18 week old roo and some females do have a comb like that one.

See my page for a 19 week old EE pullet with a 3 row pea comb (scrolll down to see Pippin and a close up of her comb at 19 weeks):

The saddle feathers do look a little pointed, but not as pointed as I would expect them to be on roo that old. If you wait a couple weeks, you should know for sure and you'd hate to get rid of a pretty Blue Ameraucana hen.

I did give him back to his breeder and she replaced him with a sexed blue Ameraucana pullet. She had a retired hatchery sexer look at all of her most recent batch of babies because she has been having this problem with late maturing roos from a certain pen. I had another guaranteed hen from her that turned out to be a roo, so I actually ended up with two blue babies that we really hope are girls!

Hen!!!!! I'm GUNNA xplain what I check for ... keep me informed I have three two are obviously chickies but I have a rooster I think too but only thing that makes me think it is a hen is the hackle they are rounded but yes pointy but not as much as it should be in upper neck they usually will fluff and then u can tell but they do look spikey but it's feathers n wings scream hen ..I see the uneven rounded feathers but wing check is almost a definite way to determine but small chance it could be mistaken but my gut says pretty girl and the uneven feathers on the wings I can see even in regular posture..I'm a newbie I could be wrong but I've done some research on them and mine are a month n a few days and I can already tell . Will the bird let u pull wing out to check difference in lengts of feathers? Roosters are even and not pointy like upper neck but more even could be rounded slot...but hens are are rounded too and different lengths the hackle on my hens is not as pointy in their upper neck but I'm suspicious of one of mine cuz I'm thinking mines a cockeral rooster but only a month n a few days old so I'm probably wrong but gut says no I'm right.. yes urs very well may be a girl cuz hackle feathers on americauna are kinda pointy even rounded but def. Difference on two and the one of mine I'm suspicious of? Hoping it's a stud lol
Hi,
I have an Ameraucana that I've thought was a hen ... but now I'm not so sure if she really is a girl. What do you guys think? Thanks!!!
Ps...Even the comb is smaller plus if it waddles vs streamline mosey as foraging that shows girl too been observing then all the time and my girls look like that I do have a blue but but younger more below in other comment who's probably right
Thats a roo 100%, hens don't get THAT defined of a wide 3 row peacomb, yes in hens combs will go nice and red but I never had an ameraucana hen with such a wide well defined 3 row comb.
roo, the saddle feathers are wayyyy too pointy to be a hen

Yeah but look at the rounded hackle feathers on upper neck compared to my my one month old rooster and I have two hens that are like its twin but then I think my one americauna is cockeral so maybe it's a hen after all I'm so new but I do know rooster Wing feathers are even when pulled gently straight to check..hens are uneven in length n in no certain order roos are more streamlineswalking too while hens waddle while foraging..but my blue, n black n blue hens look just like this but I said too at first Roo lol I'm too newbie know that's why I wanna learn..u are probably correct I was just thinking wing check at that age..you tube vids short and informative..18 wks u will know by checking in you tube they are what ur looking for to tell
