19 and a half weeks old and still no eggs :( egg countdown anyone??

Well I'm still waiting on my silver campine to start laying and now I have realized that my buttercup is a roo. (How exciting) I'm not very happy. I think I'll keep him around until him and my other roo start fighting, which I'm thinking they won't because the buttercup knows his place. (my older roo likes to frisk the buttercup)

Ok I have a confession to make....You all know how I used to check the nest boxes and behind the shed about 500 times a day looking for those first eggs? Well, it was frosty and cool today, I stayed in my pajamas all day and canned jam and pickles and such while watching chick flicks. Yes I got outta bed at 7am to let the girls out, but didn't even check for eggs till 4pm this afternoon!!!!!!! Enjoy it while it lasts, I miss the excitment of a single egg in the box, and watching for who layed it. The girls are healthy and happy, and for that I am greatful, happy egg collecting for all you guys still!! This picture was around 2pm the girls pecking at the dining room door saying come on out Julie where are you? We like when you hang out in the yard with us all day!

that is awesome

Uh, so jealous of everyone else.

My cochins are 6 months TOMORROW - NO EGGS.

My other girls (EEs, cochins, silkies) will be about 20 weeks, 5 months already. Combs are red. Boys are chasing. I don't think they are squatting yet. and no egg songs from the older ones (the youngest silkie did sing falsely the other day). In fact, I'm not so sure that that one is a girl. I'm tired of waiting. My RIR girls are too old now to lay???? And my oldest silkie just got done being broody for the 2nd time in the past coupla months. No eggs from 12 girls....for weeks, months even. Please, please, egg fairy, visit us!!! We've been good!

LOL - a crow took off with my wooden egg the other day.

Oh I'll be sending good eggy thoughts your way!!! Just think when the eggs do come they'll be eggstrordinarily special!!!

And that's funny they stole your wooden egg!!! Grrr Bratts!!!, i used to hate the crows here cause they would sit in the top of my Giant Kentucky White Oak Tree and cawcawcawcaw early in the morning, now I appreciate them, best hawk and owl deterrent around. They know who is a threat too, left the sparrow hawks nesting nearby alone, but go ape sh*t if any red tails or bigger birds of prey show up! They're super smart too, when the kids were little and I volunteered at the popcorn Friday's at the school during afternoon recess, the same flock of crows would hear the bell ring calling the kids in for class and swoop down and feast on all the spilled corn all over the playground!

Meh, I don't think this pic does the colors justice, but here's my promised pic of my daily egg basket. My olive egger hasn't laid in days so that is the missing egg from my 10 layers. Enjoy!!

So about adding lemon ... the recipe I've seen for canning apple butters calls for adding "bottled lemon juice" to each jar. But I have a "thing" agains bottled lemon juice and would prefer to use fresh-squeezed lemons. Will I kill us all if I don't use bottled lemon juice? Our lives may depend on you, Julie. :) I am for sure not eating the stuff we found. A few years ago I cleaned out another dark forgotten corner of this house I found some home-canned stuff as old as I am ... Prune Conserve from 1965. Tempting, huh? I probably had to pry it out of Dad's hands ... he'll eat anything ... which might explain why it was hidden away in the first place. I'm just glad I was able to persuade Nelson to eat some home-made strawberry rhubarb freezer jam I made this year. He likes it so much he helped make some blueberry rhubarb freezer jam, too. This is great as I was getting tired of telling him, "NO!" when he begged for store-bought "Grape" jelly. He kept telling me "but it tastes good!" and I kept asking him "compared to what?" Now he knows. Token comments kinda sort on topic: We're building a new section of coop this week before the rain starts. I may discuss it over in the Oregon thread. I've been advised to stay inside while the guys work. But I may just need to go gather some eggs or something so I can steal a look at their progress. I think maybe all our girls except the bantam breeds are laying now.
