bad week this week..... still no eggs...

I got a box of 15 chicks in the mail and only 5 made the trip :(.... it was very upsetting. I am expecting replacements this week.. they are Marans, I hope they are OK.. this is the last time i do this. I bought an incubator this weekend so I will not have to ship chicks again..

I am up to my ears in construction of coop #2 which is for the new chicks. it is a HUGE tractor made out of PVC, 10' x 20'. I am struggling so much to keep the free rangers and the dogs separated that I decided to make a giant tractor instead of the free range. Trouble is it's so big it's freaking me out that it will fall apart as soon as I move it. The one thing t has going for it is that I live far far south and keeping them warm is not an issue, heat in the summer is more scary....

Gorgeous Leghorn egg ... I love having white eggs in the mix. We get so few they seem just as special as the blue/green eggs, and make a very pretty rainbow carton when they are in there.

About the Asian Pears ... we propagate them as we have a nursery specializing in fruit trees. Anything in the scion block is "mine." A scion block can be a good little orchard, or a terrible one, depending on the year -- the trees are pruned VERY severly so they produce good quantities of bud wood, and depending on the timing and the weather sometimes there's no fruit. This year it is a pretty good yield which is why I sent out invitations to some people to have them come and pick fruit, but so far no takers. We do spray with fungicide so we can keep our nursery license, but that's it.

I'd be SO up to a canning party. You should see my kitchen. It's huge: industrial stove; three ovens; three sinks; power outlets everywhere; a counter that seats a dozen; oversized pots, pans, bowls; a full sized refrigerator AND a full sized freezer with space to add another of each if I were rich like that (I'm not!); and a space to add a second dish washer. It usually overwhelms me, but an industrious person could have several things going at once.

I'm thinking apple butter and apple sauce from the apples, and Asian Pear butter from those. I already did some frozen plums, and some I marinated in sunflower oil, raspberry vinegar, salt and pepper then dried in the oven -- so good! And froze a bunch of wild blackberries, though not enough cuz we've been pretty busy.

My mom made great apple pies, so I don't make any. What I do instead is just chop up apples, skins and all, sprinkle with cinnamon and maybe a little lemon juice if I'm feeling energetic, then bake in a big casserole dish until they are soft. That's it -- no sugar, no pie crust. We scoop it over oatmeal and reheat for breakfast. Sometimes Dad adds ice cream for a dessert.

If I got organized, I could have farm stuff all year long like my mom and grandma did. I'm getting there ... in my own way. The chickens being my symbolic first step!

So so sorry to hear about your chicks!! Poor little ones! Wow the constuction sounds stressful! Things will settle I hope for you soon!! We thought about the movable option but decided it would be impossible. My sister struggles(well not any more the dogs got near all her hens) with the dog issue. The dogs are confined but the darn chickens go in and slowly one by one disappear. I decided to only let mine free range when I'm home to supervise or lock up the dogs. We do a litlle of both when we have a chicken eater on the property. Good luck! and I'll cross my fingers for eggs your way soon!! Leslie shake that egg stick of Nelson's in Runaway's direction!!

It is a good time to get back into canning for me. We just pulled everything out of the room I've been referring to as the Hell Hole for the past 30 years. It is where things in this house wen to die, so that's a literal description, not a swear. We found some canned items in there that would qualify as antique. Not pretty. The pretense of this effort was to set up that room as the brooder room (instead of my office). But there will now be PLENTY of room on the shelves for canned goods, too. And the birds are almost big enough to go outside, and we aren't quite through with the room repairs ... It seems we're always a couple projects behind here at the Coop Co-op. But today I had a brain storm and figured out how to get two double nesting boxes out of one sheet of plywood using minimal cuts and producing one small rectangle of waste. I'm just waiting for Nelson to saw it ... if it works I'm a genius (okay, not a genius, but pretty proud of myself). Applesauce etc., tomorrow?

The only gals I'm still waiting on are 18 weeks today and have been squatting since 16 weeks. Come on my sweet little easter eggers, we can't wait to see those tiny blue eggs amongst the rest!
