I have a Black Austrolorp, two Barred Plymouth Rocks, a Rhode Island Red and a Silver Laced Wyandotte who seem very ready. The Austrolorp even squats for me.Just watched my rooster mate with my Rhodie this morning. My Easter Egger and White Plymouth Rock arent even red yet, and their combs havent developed. Not sure about my Silkie, but not too worried about her. She's just cute and sassy, thats all she needs to be. lol

I think I need to stop watching so intently. Y'know, the watched pot and all.

I had an entry on my calendar today which says "chickies 20 weeks old - watch for eggs!!!!"

I have 5 squatting hens with red faces, and lots of clucking and squawking and restlessness in the coop. One squatted a whole week ago. I've been looking for eggs 3x per day! Nothing. I just cannot wait!

Is the weather very hot right now? Extreme heat can slow down egg production or keep it from starting.

Pullets squat instinctively weeks before they lay but it's not because they are trying to lay it's to allow a rooster to mount them. they do this even if there are no roosters.but in my experience they eventually lay pretty close to the same order you observe them squatting.

All our pullest hatched on March 1st. Our SLW started to lay on July 15th and our Buf Orp the next day but the GLW and the Maran are still slacking off.

Yes, it is brutally hot right now. They seem to be coping. Also, they have had some stress, as I have had to get rid of the head rooster due to his being unnecessarily mean this weekend. I'm sure they've noticed he's gone. Along with the stress-ridden week of dealing with an angry hormonal rooster.

This wont keep me from going out to check! lol

I had an almost identical entry in my calendar yesterday!
We had 1 BR start laying 3 weeks ago, she has been steady 1 a day for a week now. Then there are my 8 slackers that seem intent to bring up that 20-24 week average

19 1/2 weeks and today two eggs!!!! Now I just need to get their coop done! right now they are still in the garage! Yikes!

Big Mama one of my RSL started squating yesterday. My other 4 girls her age, 2 RSL and 2 RIW don't even look close yet. I too have been out in the coop at least 3 times today and I am sure I will continue to do until that 1st egg arrives. This is our first time raising chickens and I can't wait until they all start laying. We have 18 hen (i think) and 1 cockerel, all ranging in ages from 17 wks to 4wks.

I have 3 WRs that started laying, first egg 17 weeks 1 day old by 18 weeks old all 3 laying. Now waiting for RIRs, BRs and RSLs to start now 18 weeks 3 days old
