19 and a half weeks old and still no eggs :( egg countdown anyone??

Yeah, our chickens squatted for my mother first and I had no idea what she was talking about. But when I went out there today and kinda squatted down with them at their level for a while, 5/8 of our ladies squatted for me. They do it when I make a move to pet them usually. It's pretty cute.

And about leghorns, I agree with RedIII. Our leghorns were always more skiddish and shy than the others. They don't tend to want to get too close even when food is involved. Where as all the other ones practically mow me over as soon as I'm in the fence. They were all raised together, so I was assuming it was a breed thing.

So this is Bette White! Beautiful chicken! Yeah, all my girls came from Dunlap too via D&B Supply they are so friendly there. I actually had to go out to the hatchery back in June to deliver back the duck I had gotten. He turned out to be a drake, and drake with female hens is a BIG NO NO. Long story short, I was in search of a good home for him (Paul) and called the hatchery wondering if they might know someone. Turned out, a lady that worked there wanted him for her duck flock and so many people loved his friendly, docile personality, he is now the hatchery mascot! He struts around the lobby during the day when Sonya is at work and goes home with her at night! Haha! Great folks there, it was hard giving him up. I Also liked your comment about your Barred a few pages back, kinda surprised me because my BR, Petrie is a total wuss...she's the bottom of the order. Not too bright either, but I love her to death I think partly because she is so dopey

Awww thanks! she and her sister snowflake are near the bottom of the pecking order but beautiful tame birds, i worry that their white color makes them targets, but personality wise they are easy to handle, and Betty's eggs are a beautiful medium to dark brown, so far my darkest ;-)

here is what you do when your hen is not laying but its almost there you grab her flip her upside down and start squezing the belly towards the vent and with luck and egg will pop out but you got to catch it in time so it doesnt fall and break.
BTW people im just joking.

Are Leghorns very personable? I like the look of a plain white chicken...purdy! But I like chickens that do well with my kids too. Thoughts?

I ordered 20 leghorns (10 Buff, 10 California White) to start my first laying flock. A prolific egg laying breed was more important to me then their willingness to be held. I didn't hold them much when they were little. I didn't have a lot of time at home, and their brooder was outside. At 16 weeks, they will come within my reach, and walk near me, but do not like to be pet or held and I'm fine with that.

We have six pullets that turned 19 weeks old yesterday. Monday we had our first egg- a small speckled brown one. That one was laid in the nest. After that we found 'soft' eggs dropped from the roost for three days in a row. Those were smaller and pinker, and then we found a harder shelled small pink egg in the nest box yesterday afternoon. So we aren't sure if they came from the same chicken or two different ones. We have only caught one of our pullets in the nest box at this point. Wish I had a monitor inside to see who'd doing what!

Hi there,
are you feeding your hens adult feed with calcium? they need calcium supplements in order to make good shells. You will see varieties of feed at tractor supply- just read the labels. Or you can set out a dish of of crushed oyster shell -- also found at tractor supply. My friend saves their egg shells, crushes them up and puts them in their food as well.

good luck!

Hi! Yes, I have a container with oyster shell out for them, and just switched to layer feed after the first egg, so hopefully we'll see things getting better soon. I think the harder shelled pink one we found yesterday was from the same chicken, so I hope which ever chicken it is is working things out lol. I am now going to also save the shells, bake them, crush, and serve to the pullets.

Why does my chicken love to torture me? My Maran is 31 weeks and no eggs

I'm also waiting, but much more patientely, on my 14 week old Salmon Faverolle- hopefully she''l lay ealier than her friend the maran! Her comb is already beggining to grow, so I'm hopeful!
31 weeks! AGGGGGHHHHH! I have two maran chickens that are only about 12 weeks...guess I'll just expect eggs next YEAR from them. lol

Is it normal for a newly laying pullet to be laying a double yolker every day?! My RIR has laid a double yolker size large egg on the scale every day for 4 days now! I wonder how long until she normalizes and her gets start getting officially bigger with a single yolk?
My only layer so far is an isa brown and she lays a double about every 3rd or 4th egg. She's been laying for about 5 weeks now.
