Well, I can't participate in this forum any more because:
I found the little egg this morning about 11 when I let the girls out of the coop. It must have been laid yesterday since it was cold and I spotted it near the frost free spigot outside the indoor run about 5 minutes after I let them out. Not sure which girl laid it, I was expecting the Anconas to be first based on the red combs but this egg is a very light brown, not white. I finished their nest box and hopefully they will say "Hey, what a great place to lay eggs!". The girls are all 20 1/2 weeks old and this is on the early side of when I originally expected the first egg.

Still waiting. Getting a little worried since my friend, who got hers mid-May when I did, has 2 laying already. I've tried looking in all their hangout spots in the yard, just in case. They haven't been out as much since the weather has been wet and cold here in PA. I think a watched chicken doesn't lay!

Same breed, same general location? How many and how much space? How similar are their lifestyles? Coop space, run space, opportunity to get out and wander the yard? I would guess there are a lot of factors that go into how fast a particular chicken gets to point of lay. But, since I just got the first egg from the first chickens I've ever had, I'm not the one to give

in my "box o' chicks" they were divvied up amongst 4 friends. mine laid a full month before all the others, all hatched 4/20/12, mine started 9-28, one group started about 10-28, the other 2 groups are not laying. mine get a bit of free range everyday, the second laying group get no free range, too close to a minor highway, but still speeds of 55+... the 3rd group have only free range, yet no hidden nests found... and the 4th also get a bit of free range, maybe not as often as mine...Same hatchery, same order. Funny thing is she doesn't even have a run and can't free range due to dogs. (Dairy farm) Thinking mine are spoiled, lol. Mine are a little larger than hers, I noticed. She wasn't using any supplemental light when she got her egg, and lives in the next town over from me. Same type of birds, pretty much.
