Well, I can't participate in this forum any more because:

I found the little egg this morning about 11 when I let the girls out of the coop. It must have been laid yesterday since it was cold and I spotted it near the frost free spigot outside the indoor run about 5 minutes after I let them out. Not sure which girl laid it, I was expecting the Anconas to be first based on the red combs but this egg is a very light brown, not white. I finished their nest box and hopefully they will say "Hey, what a great place to lay eggs!". The girls are all 20 1/2 weeks old and this is on the early side of when I originally expected the first egg.

Congrats :D

Still waiting. Getting a little worried since my friend, who got hers mid-May when I did, has 2 laying already. I've tried looking in all their hangout spots in the yard, just in case. They haven't been out as much since the weather has been wet and cold here in PA. I think a watched chicken doesn't lay!

Same breed, same general location? How many and how much space? How similar are their lifestyles? Coop space, run space, opportunity to get out and wander the yard? I would guess there are a lot of factors that go into how fast a particular chicken gets to point of lay. But, since I just got the first egg from the first chickens I've ever had, I'm not the one to give advice

Cool. I can pass on all my knowledge about how I knew this egg was coming

They aren't even giving a HINT of squatting today, not a one of them!
I can certainly attest that "It will happen"

Same hatchery, same order. Funny thing is she doesn't even have a run and can't free range due to dogs. (Dairy farm) Thinking mine are spoiled, lol. Mine are a little larger than hers, I noticed. She wasn't using any supplemental light when she got her egg, and lives in the next town over from me. Same type of birds, pretty much.

in my "box o' chicks" they were divvied up amongst 4 friends. mine laid a full month before all the others, all hatched 4/20/12, mine started 9-28, one group started about 10-28, the other 2 groups are not laying. mine get a bit of free range everyday, the second laying group get no free range, too close to a minor highway, but still speeds of 55+... the 3rd group have only free range, yet no hidden nests found... and the 4th also get a bit of free range, maybe not as often as mine...

honestly, I believe it is strictly down to each individual chicken and her personal development. once one of my girls started, they were all laying within 2 weeks. and mine are spoi ~ er ~ deserving...

My7mo old Blue Cochin started laying this week, and I've gotten 6 eggs in a row from her. Her sister which is 1/2 Cochin &1/2 sex link still hasn't laid and doesn't look ready either.

Something weird is going on....

All morning Desdemona was doing the egg song and walking in and out of the coop every 5 mins.

eventually she went in and never came out. I hear the sqawking still going on. Now she is just
sitting in there in the nesting box all quiet.

So I'm wondering how long she should be in there if she's just laying a egg. It's been going on since
about 7:00am...

hope she doesnt' have an egg stuck in there, or maybe it's like having your first baby, it takes much
longer...

To quote Jeff Probst "I got nuthin' for you". Kind of interesting that they live on a farm but don't have even a run. Maybe no time or money to build one just yet. There must be at least a LITTLE space for one.

One of the unexplainable things in life I guess. Maybe her girls, not having the freedom of yours, think they are in a commercial environment and better lay or they'll be looking at the dish from the wrong side. I'm sure they'll be chipping into the household soon, hang in there.

ElizMartin over on the Faverolle thread suggested my first egg might be from one of Favs. She has Anconas as well and confirmed that yes, they WILL be pure white. Also that Favs lay a Medium size egg. It will take more than a bit if "generosity" to describe that first one as Medium

But then, I'm sure it was as much a surprise to the hen laying it as it was to me finding it!

Good girl! And now you know you're doing something right.

Ours took to the nesting boxes the first day they were available. We still find a very few stray eggs ...
