19 and a half weeks old and still no eggs :( egg countdown anyone??

Still waiting. Getting a little worried since my friend, who got hers mid-May when I did, has 2 laying already. I've tried looking in all their hangout spots in the yard, just in case. They haven't been out as much since the weather has been wet and cold here in PA. I think a watched chicken doesn't lay!

Could it be the food?

One thing I've been noticing more specifically since we got chickens, we are on a hill facing East/South, and seem to get quite a bit more daylight than the valley floor or other exposures get. Must be why they grow grapes all around us. And may be why our flock lays pretty well. Dunno, though.

I hope not

My girls get NO direct sunlight in their coop until after noon, that side of the barn faces west.

No more little brown eggs yet. One of the Anconas (Uwe) was singing the Egg Song while I was down working on a chicken door in the barn door. I knew where she had just been but found no egg. She sang again later but again no egg. I put her in the nest box and she stayed a while, came out singing her head off, but no egg. One of the Faverolles sang with her but none of the other girls seemed to know the words. I presume then that Clemence gave us the first egg. Uwe went back in the nest box on her own a couple more times, singing when she came out, but no egg in the box. I'm guessing it will be tomorrow. At least I know SHE knows where the eggs are supposed to go. Maybe she'll tell the other girls what a great place she found and they will all go in on their own when the time comes.

FINALLY got our first eggs from 2 of our Buff Orps this past week! Hopefully, evereyone else will kick in their fair share soon. They hit 22 weeks last Wednesday. The eggs are kind of oddly shaped, though, compared to the Australorps's. These are elongated, and they're starting out a bit bigger than the Aussie's did. Can't complain, though; they tasted good!

How exciting. My flock is 21 weeks old, this makes me excited. I have had a golfball in each nesting box. A couple days ago my OH suggested leaving one box empty. Since I did that they seem to go inside it more because the grasses keep getting kicked out of that box. Maybe I will see some eggs before the dead of winter hits.

Congratulations!

I did find out that my coworker only has one of her new birds laying. Not so worried! When we picked up two of our birds today, it almost felt like there could be an egg ready. I was trying to feel the pelvic bone. Hard to tell for sure, my son was holding her. When I checked the other day it didn't seem that way.....

Our adorable little Sebright laid her first egg yesterday. I have no clue how old she is because she is the only female chicken we have who wasn't a day-old feed-store chick or born here. I'll try to get Nelson to post pictures of her with her egg ...! Amazing to know an egg that size came out of such a small bird! We have three female bantams ... she is the first to lay, but I'm sure she is the oldest.

Bantams take longer to start laying ... true?
