19 chicks left on my doorstep! Roosting pic added, page 4

No matter how long the chicks live I think what you did was very admirable!! I love your philosophy on giving them a good life no matter how long they live. At least they will be getting 4 or so months of good care and a great home. Bravo to you!!

DH tells me their dirty butts will clear up after a few days of being off the hot feed.

Keep in mind the life expectancy of Cornish rocks are 1 year anything after that is a blessing and thats if they make it that way CxR just fall over dead alot i had 50 I bought and 25 of them just keeled over from different reasons seems like i lose one a day, I have treated all i can treat cleaned all i can clean sprayed my yard all i can spray. Its just in there blood to get fat or die trying. Hope you have better luck then I did Good Luck.

I would give them as many greens as possible and as little corn as possible. It will extend their lives.

Yes, I'm going to start supervised free ranging them at the beginning of next week. Make them work a little for their food.
I am fully aware that they won't have long lives. Still I am smiling right now to watch them do things - like run around chasing bugs, roosting and watching the world go by - that they never would have had the chance to do in the commercial house. When they die, they'll die as free birds.

I just got my first Cornish Cross chicks. They are not quite 2 wks old. I have never in my life seen sooooo much poop! They drink tons of water, too. I bought mine for meat .... hope to fill up the freezer in a few weeks. If not for that, I would never never have these things! They should be a totally different species, I swear!

Good luck to you.

I definitely never intended to order any or raise any. I've been trying to get some battery hens for a couple years now, but the battery hen farmers aren't too fond of people like me. They'd rather send their retired battery hens to Tyson for processing than to let me buy even just a few. Saving these broiler chicks from having "their heads pinched off" and going in a dumpster is the next best thing to me.

i know if you let them free range they can live up to 2 years. I know this cause in the meat section someone was talking about it and hers was almost 2 and still alive. But she only free ranged it so it didn't feed it's self to death

And i would like to add.................WHY DOES'T ANYONE LEAVE ME CHICKS AT THE FRONT DOOR?
