Yes, we visited the farm of a state trooper that is a friend of DHs. At the time his birds (all broiler house rescues) were about 18 months old, so I know it can be done). He free ranges exclusively.

Want me to give my addition-challenged neighbor your address?

Please update us on how they do. It totally made me smile to think that while they're alive they will get to run and scratch and enjoy fresh air.

19 chicks! When it rains it pours! Well, if you're not raising most for egg laying, what will you be doing with all those extra's?

I'm impressed with your brooder. That wading pool is a nice size. the PVC & plastic looks like serious protection against drafts:clap Nice work! You are clever!

Oh the broiler chicks will be egg layers too. They won't be great egg layers, but it doesn't matter. I keep chickens more for my sanitys sake than anything else. Right now in my adult coop I have one roo and 13 hens. I know for a fact that one of my turken chicks and one of my silkie chicks are roos, so that's 11 pullets to 2 cockerels with them. No telling yet on how many of the broiler chicks are roos. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. No sense borrowing tomorrow's troubles when there's enough troubles for today.

Thanks for the compliment on the brooder. The same set-up worked just fine for my now adult brahmas. These chicks however just use it as a pit stop during their travels around the front porch. Oh well, thank goodness for power washers.

Here's one of the broiler chicks roosting this morning, enjoying the breeze:

I doubt I'll be able to name the broiler chicks and have the names stick. They just look too much alike.
