My grandfather had a Farmall like that with a hand crank... I never was big enough to crank it up. They used it to blow silage up into the silo. Yea that is a super cool saw mill.

About 40 miles from me they have a steam powered reciprocating saw in an outdoor museum that was used to cut railroad ties. I've always wanted to make a scale model of that and power it with a steam engine I have.

I think I'd be inclined to put hdw cloth under the slab wood to keep rats and mice out. That would negate the "free" idea of it. Is it possible to have the slab wood worked a bit more to give you parallel edges to work with?
That is why I suggested using a table saw to make them an even width.

I can't fathom how I would go about doing that to get the first straight cut.
You can screw a guide board along the top center of the slab, adjust the blade so it will sheer off the excess, but not hit the guide board and use the guide board to get your straight edge.
