1st Egg! Cheated;)

So am I better off picking up wooden eggs tomorrow or sticking with my plastic easter eggs? I am a newbie to this so all help is appreciated.

That's what I started with. It worked fine. The only thing I had trouble with is one of my girls kept kicking at it and braking it open. You could glue it or tape it closed. That would work just fine. They didn't even care that the eggs were yellow.

I just checked Michael's Crafts and Jo Ann's on-line and they both seem to carry wooden eggs. I have a Farmers Fair to be at tomorrow with a booth on backyard chickens. After the fair I will pick up some wooden eggs. It's Sunday, so Hobby Lobby (my favorite) will be closed. WIsh me luck and thank you, thank you for your responses.

That is too funny! These girls aren't the smartest. Thanks for allowing me bragging rights. That egg just keeps getting bigger. It will be the size of a duck egg by the time I tell enough people.

I used a couple gold balls before I bought fake eggs (ceramic I think, hard like cement). I have one hen that would not get in the nest when I took out the golf ball. She squawked and squawked and kept looking for it. I finally put it back, and she lays there every day, rarely misses. I guess they all have their favorites. The reason I wanted something hard was so they couldn't peck it open, or think they should peck at their own egg. Does that make any sense? Good luck!

Congratulations! I got a ceramic egg to put in the nest box because they always pushed the plastic ones out. They still lay in the storage shed tho. LOL

If you use plastic eggs fill them with sand and tape them or glue them shut (electric tape should work well). That way they will be heavy and not get kicked out of the nest and/or opened. I use wooden eggs, got them for $1 a piece at the craft store. It works for me.....eggs are always laid in the box (so far.....)

Are you leaving faux eggs in the nest after your hens start to lay there? My hens pushed the plastic egg out and laid their own in it's place. I never put the fake egg back in after that!
