1st Goose egg for 2010

My geese are kicking off the laying season on the last day of January.

I got my 1st egg from pen # 3 which is Sebastopol X Gray Saddleback Pomeranians. They have been breeding for a couple of weeks now so I hope the boys are up to par!

I may have to start firing up more incubators.

Congrads!!! Mine should be laying in a few weeks, Im not ready for them. Im hoping I get some eggs from the dewlapps and the swans this year, fingers and toes crossed..........

I got 2 more goose eggs for the same pen this morning.

I have 3 Pomeranian gooses in with a Sebastopol gander in that pen.

Oh, I can't wait to get a goose egg!!! This is my first year having geese old enough to reproduce...I got my Sebbies as babies last year. I can't wait to have more babies!!

Would you be willing to post a pic of your goose pen? Mine roam free on my 2 acres right now, but I'm thinking I should maybe lock them up for breeding season? Not sure how big of a pen they would need though.

I did have mine free ranging here on 3 acres, but I wanted to control who bred who this year. I sectioned off rows of pen they are about 15 feet wide and 30 to 45 feet long for 4 of them and the 5 pen is quite a bit larger. I bought several rolls of wire(28 inches tall) from Lowes and ran them around T-post. Also last year when I let them free range I was constantly trying to find the nests...Everytime I found one they move the nest. I did lose a few (they froze) before I found the new nests. It will be much easier to collect eggs and hopefully gather them before they freeze on cold mornings.

Did you put wire over the top of the pens or just around the bottoms? I have a middle pasture that I don't use and it just needs a gate to close it off. It's about 1/2 an acre and I could just put them in there. There's not a whole lot of low bushes, so I shouldn't have a problem finding the nests. Do you think that would work?
