Fluke accident discovered tonight. One of our 2.5 week old chicks had a black toe with a clump of poop. I initially thought it'd walked through some cecal poo and it dried on the foot so I didn't think much of it this morning heading into work as she was acting completely normal, jumping into my hand and everything. Kiddo was concerned tonight so I went to wash it off and realized that it was not just poo. Poor thing had managed to have a piece of pine shaving wrapped around the toe and dried hard. Pretty sure the toe tip is a goner. Feeling awful for not noticing sooner than today though I'm sure it wasn't there Sunday when we rebanded everyone's legs for growth room. There are 31 chicks so I suppose it's not surprising I didn't notice a single toe. Le sigh. What a crazy fluke accident. I didn't get photos from before unfortunately so below is the poo/shaving chunk and toe.
