I have 13 chickens and 2 are injured.

Lucy one of my Leghorns has an injured R leg after being chased by a cat on Wednesday and was placed in the basement in our homemade chicken hospital.

Louise a Rhode Island Red was attacked by a hawk this morning and has a huge laceration to her back and one leg. After the attack we could not find her for hours. Once she came out of hiding and we saw her laceration I knew we needed to take her to the vet. We are lucky to have a 24 hr Emergency Vet who staffs an exotic vet 24hrs.

We decided to take both chickens. Lucy had an x-ray and was found to have a femur fracture, and Louise wounds were washed out and bandaged. I need to take her back to the vet tomorrow.

What I need to know is, has anyone treated a femur fracture in a chicken. The fracture is up high on her leg so a splint won't work. I think I need to put her in a sling so her leg dangles straight without her putting any weight on it. Any thought would be helpful.

Sorry to hear about your two hens. It is great that you were able to get them seen by a vet. There are many good picture of slings here on BYC and also on Google if you type in slings for chickens. I would be a little concerned that you hen's leg might swell if she is in the sling for long periods. Femur head breaks don't always do well according to what I have read.

My goodness, it would be hard to miss that break in the thigh. At least it is farther down from the head of the femur, so hopefully it will be easier to heal. Hopefully, someone who has had a chicken heal from this type of break will be able to comment on this.
