I have 13 chickens and 2 are injured.
Lucy one of my Leghorns has an injured R leg after being chased by a cat on Wednesday and was placed in the basement in our homemade chicken hospital.
Louise a Rhode Island Red was attacked by a hawk this morning and has a huge laceration to her back and one leg. After the attack we could not find her for hours. Once she came out of hiding and we saw her laceration I knew we needed to take her to the vet. We are lucky to have a 24 hr Emergency Vet who staffs an exotic vet 24hrs.
We decided to take both chickens. Lucy had an x-ray and was found to have a femur fracture, and Louise wounds were washed out and bandaged. I need to take her back to the vet tomorrow.
What I need to know is, has anyone treated a femur fracture in a chicken. The fracture is up high on her leg so a splint won't work. I think I need to put her in a sling so her leg dangles straight without her putting any weight on it. Any thought would be helpful.
