2 Pipped at wrong end

You know, I tried. I only had a mini maglite to do it with. We were just too nervous to leave them out of the incubator for very long. I tried again to candle a couple 2 nights ago, and I saw a dark blob with space at the top. BUT all of my eggs are dark, so I suppose it would be hard. I'm just so afraid I messed up and none will hatch! I've never done this before! BUT I kind of hope they don't do anything until Friday, which really is day 21. I am off Friday through the weekend, so that would be perfect! BTW, I looked at your page. Your chickens are so cute, with the dogs looking at them!

I helped one that pipped on the wrong end out. There was no way he would have come out on his own. I steamed/heated the bathroom before I opened the bator.

So far he's alive. There was no yolk and very very very minimal blood so he was definitely ready just couldn't. The only problem now is his balance is off. I think this is from being upside down for so long. I think his body naturally wants to go upside down. He can get upright but gets knocked over very easily.

It's too early to tell if my upside down chick will be ok or not.

This is my second hatch, and I'm much more relaxed about it. I was a nervous wreck the first hatch. I think I'll have a chick out by morning. Hopefully the other 20 eggs will start to pip soon. I have eggs waiting to go in the incubator! Keep me posted!

Hennypen,
I hope your chick starts to feel better. I'm going to wait 24 hours before I help, if I do. I don't want to hurt the others that have pipped by opening the bator.

I just hatched a batch of our own eggs. For days 1-18 I usually keep the bator at 50% but this time experimented with it closer to 40%.
Was really pleased at how well dried down the eggs were before I locked down BUT this time I've had two pip (out of 10 eggs) on the wrong end.
This is a first for me out of about 15 hatches so I'm wondering if the smaller space I created by increased drying down caused it.
I have hatched 4 batches from the same birds previously and never had this happen.
And I always hatch in egg cartons, too.

I was worried about drying the pipped eggs out to but when I was sure the humidity in the bathroom was more than inside the incubator and the temp was as hot as I could get it, I grabbed him. I think I got the heat up to 85 in the bathroom and humidity around 80%.

The other two eggs were pipped but hatched fine using that method. The key I think is making sure the humidity outside the incubator is high.

I used tweezers and wet paper towels (warm water) to keep him as warm as possible when removing the shell. I left the thick membrane on but did remove it from his head. There is a very very thin membrane inside that one to be aware of. Make sure that is away from his beak. I let this little guy 'kick out' of the rest of the shell. He was pretty tired so I did remove more shell than I was planning to but left enough on the bottom to make him work a little.

I hit blood a couple of times and when I did, he'd go back in the incubator for abotu 15 minutes.

Good luck. My guy would not have made it out without help. There was no room to move in the small end at all.

One first egg has been pipped for 24 hours now and I never saw any activity. I may assume that one didn't make it. The other one that pipped on the other end is chirping a little and I can see it's beak. I may give it some more time.

I let mine go for 24 hours. Yours may still be alive. Can you see inside the hole at all? My guy was really wearing out at the end and the only movement was through the hole. I could see it breathing. Once there was no more strong movement or attempt to get out was when I went in for the save.

He's doing much better and I can't tell which one it was now. lol They all look identical.

It never made it through the white membrane. . . it just cracked the shell. I have some others cheeping in their eggs now, maybe that will be some incentive.
