$20.00 for a pullet??

guys, I was at THIS exact facility yesterday. the place is spotless. The animals are all well-cared for. many people in the area buy from her, including people on BYC, and have been very happy with the quality of the birds. the Bay Area is a place where you pay a premium for everything. be careful not to disparage the care given at TruNorth Farms based on what you are reading from the website. If you think the website is giving some negative info, I will happily contact Rachel and let her know.

hers are 12 weeks old right now

Mine were already laying and 9 months. But, again I donn't know the market in CA. It just sounds like alot for that age considering they aren't laying yet.

I Just went to a poultry swap and sold one cochin hen for 15$ and another (my favorite) for 20$

Cochins are beautiful birds and I would have definately paid that price for one. I bet they were beautiful and well worth it

But, I wouldn't pay that much for a 8 week old barred rock or leg horn. Just an opinion and really I have no clue what birds go for in other states. Just CT.

I plan on going tomorrow, as a matter of fact. Or Saturday. Probably tomorrow, though - I took the day off so I could go when there MIGHT be fewer crowds AND before the temperature spikes again. I'd be glad to blather about what I saw at the Fair! (Please, dear Lord, do not let me buy any more chickens right now. Or fall in love with any other critters!)

Keep me posted? <3

Id go higher than 20$ for a started pullet at POL Id go alot more than that if i Really "needed" her-I get 15$ -20$ per pullet or more if I want...But I wont sell those birds LOL

I guess it all depend's on where you are.Mine are about 4 month's old now and I wouldn't have a clue what to sell mine for.I have a mix of sex link red comet and SOMETHING lol. they pretty bird's I need to get pic's.Price's range here anywhere from $6-14 + for a laying hen + depending on breed. We paid around $2 something at TSC early spring for the chick's.A lot of people really dont understand how much work and money goes into them.Feed, electricity to brood, brooder, bedding feed and water set up.I usualy sold ducklings at $3 ea.I had one buyer wanted me to keep until feathered and pond ready and pay $6 each. Baaaa I don't think so dude! Do you have ANY idea how much duck poo and stink that's gonna cost MOI".I see often Bantam Trio's for sale her anywhere from $25-$50 and welll I don't see ya making a lot of omlet's from them. But then again I favor the bantam DH like's his layer's and duck's.I think I am going to price my newbie OEGB's at $3 per chick at least buyer's know they OEGB and can see parent's I just set 17 more egg's in lockdown.

Wow. What a telling thread.

I thank God every day that I was born a Californian and this thread just reinforces that gratitude.

kmwright there is also a guy here in Sacramento that sells all ages of pullets and all breeds from slw to barred rocks and all kinds of breeds. They sell 2-4 month olfs and 4-6 month olds for 8.00 to 12.00 I think. HHandbasket got a few from him, and was pleased with the scenerio she saw. He is in North Sacramento area. I can't find his Craigslist ad but I will ask HHandbasket to send you his number if you are interested. Just let me know!

I usually check out Craig's List for a few weeks for a certain item when I'm trying to see what they cost. I was thinking of trying to sell pullets that I raise and saw that people around here are getting 20 dollars or less for them. When I add up the cost of the chicks, bedding, feed, and my time, which is worth something, I don't see that as a money making venture unless I was getting the chicks for free. Even then, it would be a lot of work for little money. I think 20.00 is a great deal.
I saw it was the same for ducks, who are even more expensive to feed, people around here selling them for 10.00. I could not raise one that cheap! For that little, we will eat them ourselves!
