-20 wind chill expected tonight

It was -10 air temp here last night. I think the high here is only 4 degrees, ick! We have four 250 watt bulbs going, and that is just for the bottle calves. I have my husbands work lights as heat lamps in the coop. He adjusted the timer for me (I could never figure that darn thing out, lol!) so it comes on earlier in the evening, and stays on later in the morning.

Well, my little thermometer says its 1.5 degrees out there right now. WOW! I have YET to go out to the coops....but I am thinking everything should be ok....with all the heat lamps on out there. I have the monitor on, and I hear happy hens makeing thier normal clucks....so, I will waite untill it at LEAST reached 10 degrees, befor I go out.

It is 18 degrees here south of Atlanta. We even got some snow yesterday. That's really rare!!!

I wasn't so worried about my chickens as I am about 2 female goats that about to kid anyday. I have a heat lamp in the barn, and most of the chickens like to roost in there instead of the chicken coop anyway. This morning all the water was frozen. I brought out hot water to thaw the ice. Everyone is none worse for the wear!

It's 7 degrees here in Ohio, windchill is about -10. I don't have a temp sensor in the coop but I think we're buying one today. I have two 250-watt heat lamps in there, but between midnight and 8 a.m. my water froze solid. Everything in the tray was frozen solid and the tub part had also partially frozen. I'm worried for my girls and am actually thinking of buying a third heat lamp today. It's either that or they're going in the garage in a dog ex-pen. And would you believe it? They continue to lay eggs! What good girls they are. Real troopers.

Not sure how cold we got over night but the winds are just starting to really kick in ( 40+ mph gusts expected ). I think our windchills will be at least -20 degrees. We installed a heat lamp into the coop and it seemed to take the edge off. We have a tractor so a full size heat lamp would probably get them too warm, so my husband picked up a "moonlit" bulb from the reptile section of Petsmart ( it doesn't effect their sleep mode and is like a black light). It produced just enough heat I think. It was still cool inside but nothing more than a normal winters day in there. That way they aren't fluxuating too much in temps. The water bottle was not frozen, so that's a good sign. We'll keep it closed all day.
Well, we have at least a couple more days until a slight warm up, then it's back to the cold temps I hear.
I'm just concerned they won't have the ability to stretch thier wings and will pick at each other. I told my husband that maybe we should set up the horse trailer for them for a bit? It would give them plenty of room! Has anyone ever done something like that?
Just an idea.

this is what I find most impressive about all of our cold snaps......I expect it to be cold for us, but when our southern friends report things like this.....

you guys/gals and critters are just not acclimated to it!

Stay warm!

Got down to 10 last night, didn't hear the usual 1 a.m. crowing and feared the worst this morning, but everybody is fine.

I'm oicking up 6 sexlinks this afternoon, 6 more to worry about in the cold.
Am I crazy or what?
