2008 Changes-What Are You NOT Doing This Year re: Chickens?

I WILL NOT paint my chickens florescent colors in celebration of MIL day.

I WILL NOT line the insides of my nesting boxes with fox fur.

I WILL NOT serve baked alaska to my chickens on a weekly basis.

After that, ALL BETS ARE OFF!!!

I will NOT have my current laying flock. I will start to concentrate on the blue/black/ splash Orpingtons standards and my Mottled bantam cochins

i will not keep new chickens around long enough that even though i don't name them that they start to learn their names anyway. witness "skinny chicken" who runs to "her name" when i walk out with food. oh, skinny chicken, i didn't INTEND to name you.

I was just going to say, in all seriousness, that IF I could change anything regarding my chickens this year, it would be cooling the coop in the summer and heating it in the winter. Meaning insulating, etc.

I would also bring it down closer to or even on the ground. It's an olllllllllllllld building that is up on blocks and it's getting harder for my poor old knees to step in. I would also bump the dividing wall between the feed room and the hen house to expand their space a bit. This would make cleaning easier as well.

BTW, I think I'm hearing subliminal messages saying something along the lines of "duckies". Note to self, do NOT listen to the little voices in your head anymore!!

Sorry, Speckled......we didn't intend to hijack your thread. but, for me personally, the only things I would do differently, I really can't and all the things that I 'could' do differently might cause me to need a divorce attorney! LOL

And now............back to our regularly scheduled program.........

Not doing this year: Amercuana Bantams, sold off the pretty white pair last year and got down to three original gals and two of their blue daughters probably not for breeding...The original gals will be with the Hamburg bantam roo for Easter Egger offsprings.

Limit my number of Hamburg Bantams chicks and eggs and try to make a go of getting some Spitzhauben Bantams by crossing the Hamburg bantam roo over the Spitzhauben pullets. Otherwise, they will be laying eggs again.

What I will be doing this year is to increase the number of Blue, Splash, Black and White Orpingtons from Catalupa Farms and other sources such as Sandhill lines.

And a new bigger full enclosed chicken coop with NO run, mucky mucky smelly and I got better deal to do with the piece of run and my birds can stay drier and cleaner. And happier neighbors too.

New Years resolution would be trying to finish that In Her Garden cross stitching...been working on it off and on since August of 06. It took alot of time and so many colors to switch from and trying to find conversion color threads from the Dimensions chart to DMC chart. So far so good!
