2009 Quilt block of the month - February

Wow Sem, thats lovely!!!

Luna - I use a machine, hand quiting just takes too long and I've had enough needles stuck in my finger. Machine quilting is difficult enough, and takes skill - I don't think its something anyone can do, or just pick up and make perfect stuff.. its still personal in my opinion, and made with just as much love and attention - just faster.

Zoo - Marlin is around, he pm'd me the other day - he's just busy with work.

Working LOL I don't believe it, LOL. I really think his wife caught him with her machine LOL. Maybe he is going to have to go to Wally world and by one of those $80 brothers that I seen there today LOL. Just so he can stay safe LOL.

Skand, It looks to me like the center block was not the right size to begin with... what size did the center fussy cut block start out to be?

It really is beautifully designed! and the 1/4" seam allowance around the outside edges looks good! (not something that always works out) there's much more RIGHT about it than wrong! It's very nice work overall!

As to the question about quilting, I prefer to hand quilt. If I had easy access to a long arm machine, I might machine quilt certain things, but hand quilting is just what I like to do.

Thanks, Jersey girl! Don't be. At the time I had an obsessive perfectionist quilting friend, so I became obsessed for a while.

I quilt by machine. But I applique, and I am really addicted to that feeling of a needle and thread in my hand and the rhythm of it. I certainly would hand quilt at some point, I have already bought my cheating needles, the eye in the middle and points at both ends. Gotta try it.

I think Marlin was using the machine, bent down to take a closer look, and accidentally sewed a finger to his earlobe. Poor guy had to sit there for hours waiting for his wife to come home and rescue him.

He said he was too embarrassed to tell Wildsky or anyone, but.........

I think you all have a right to know

I would like to sign up if its not too late..ssings and Wildsky

Here is how it will work:
*Each person will make up one quilt block per month, to send to one other person in the group. Each person will receive one quilt block per month.

*Each person can chose color (or two) of blocks they would like to receive. All Blocks will be 12.5 unless otherwise requested and noted.

*Fabrics must be 100% cotton and pre-washed to avoid shrinkage.

*Members under 18 years of age must have a parents permission (emailed or here on the thread) as we need an address.

*Folks can sign up for one month and not the next, for however long we continue. No need to promise to be here sewing for a year. One month at a time!

ADDED:
* Completed blocks must be mailed out by the 20th of each month.
* If you're feeling brave, you can sign up TWICE. So you will make two for two different people, and you will receive two from two different people.

It will work something like this:
February:
A will send to B
B to C
C to D
D to E
E to F
F to G

March
A to C
B to D
C to E
D to F
E to G
F to A

I will update this first post each month, so you will know who you’re sending to and what color and size block they prefer.
All your color and size requirements must be decided by the first Monday of the month – if you need to make changes after that point you will need to contact the person who is sending to you, to make sure they haven’t already purchased the fabric or started on your block.

Feel free to chatter, or swap fabric pieces as needed on this thread. Blocks and fabric pieces can easily be popped into an envelope making postage not too big of an issue. Please contact me or Acre to make any changes in color, size or if you want to drop out or join up.
You can drop out and join at any point along the way.
I will try to make an extra block or two in case we have some failures, anyone else who would like to do the same please do, and let me know. Thank you!!

We will start on Feb 1st.

DISCLAIMER:
BYC, and staff are not responsible for what happens within this swap and that people should only swap if they are comfortable knowing they might not get a block in return. (Mail or failure on the part of one person to send one) we will do our best to make sure that doesn’t happen, and will try keep a few blocks on hand to make amends. Please PM Acre or myself if there are any failures.

In the world of quilting there is a lot of snobbery in the hand vs machine subject.

If our foremothers had the ability to have a machine to sew by you bet your sweet bippy they would have used it and not sewn things by hand.

A machine sewn quilt has just as much love and effort behind it as a hand sewn quilt. I find them to be equally as personal and filled with warm toasty feelings as any other handmade item.

The intent behind the effort is where the value is found in the eye of the beholder.

I have done both machine and hand quilting.

With the shape my hands are in if I had to hand quilt for it to be of value I would never be able to quilt again.
